AbstractThe D&H Color Rule, available since 1967, is useful as a color‐vision test and to check on the specification of secondary standard illuminants. The data of several authors are combined for ready availability as a diagnostic aid. Normal trichromats make responses with the Color Rule that are dependent on age. The apparent yellowing of the lens results in the same change in responses on the Color Rule as by an illuminant change of 50–75 M

AbstractSubjects were asked to identify colors in the Munsell notation, without comparing with the samples of theMunsell Book of Color, and then were immediately told the values ofH, V, andC.This training was carried out with 520 colors identified twice by each of five subjects, two experienced and three completely naive with the Munsell system. The effect of training was noticeable over the series of 1040 estimations, and the means of absolute deviations at the end were 3.1, 0.5, and 1.25 forH, V, andC, respectively. Systematic shifts of mean estimations from the Munsell notations were noted: saturated colors tend to be judged lighter whenV<5, there is a tendency to scale compression in the estimation ofC, and colors of hue between 7.5B and 7.5B tend to shift toward B, and colors of 10PB and 2.5P, toward P.

AbstractAlgorithms for formulating colorant combinations of more than three dyes are based on a process of conditioned‐least‐squares minimization. Using a technique of matrix partitioning, rather than the classical procedure which uses undetermined Lagrangian multipliers, it is possible to reduce the problem to a lower‐order one of unconstrained minimization followed by matrix substitution. The system also yields a correction matrix which may be employed to improve the metameric match of a trial dyeing by adjusting the first three dyes of the set. The algorithms have been incorporated into a colour‐matching program using a PDP11‐VO3 minicomputer. Included in a number of subroutines for matrix manipulation is one called GINV, which produces a generalized inverse with features designed to achieve best possible accuracy. It is demonstrated that the generalized inverse provides versatility without requiring elaborate modifications of programming, since the generalized inverse may be directly applied to solving least‐squares problems. This feature may be useful when setting up the initial recipe approximation for more than three dyes, and it can yield directly the best approximation to a tristimulus match where the colour to be matched calls for two dyes or a
