Scales and fin rays from brown trout(Salmo truttaL.) of known age were examined. Only 6 out of 29 scales were read correctly by 2 operators. The commonest fault was to read an extra year into the first year's growth. Fin ray sections proved much easier to read than the scales. The author correctly read all of a sample of 22 fin ray sections.

The first Southern Hemisphere occurrence of the platylepadine barnacleStomatolepas elegans(Costa) is recorded. The host animal was a young leather‐back turtle(Dermochelys coriacea(Linné)) .

Two new species ofHatschekiaPoche, 1901 are described from New Zealand specimens ofAllomycterus jaculiferus(Cuvier, 1818) andLepidopus caudatus(Euthrasen, 1878) respectively. Comment is made on the need for revision within the genusHatschekia.

Pseudocycnus appendiculatusHeller is described and recorded, for the first time from New Zealand, onThunnus alalunga(Bonnaterre, 1788).Pseudocycnus spinosusPearse, 1951 andP. thynnusBrandes, 1955 are thought to be synonyms of P.appendiculatus. Other species previously placed in the genus are discussed and the action of Yamaguti (1963) in removing them to other genera supported. It is suggested that the family Pseudocycnidae Yamaguti, 1963 cannot be differentiated from the family Dichelesthiidae Bassett‐Smith, 1898.

摘要:

A shallow water benthic sample from off the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula contained compact shelly sand overlain by mud. The fauna, confined to the sand layer, consisted of infaunal bivalves dominated byTawera spissa(Deshayes). The presence of dead or decaying bivalves only, indicates a heavy mortality in the community attributed to burial by the mud layer.
