Rock lobsters ofJasussubgroup"lalandifin New Zealand(Jasus edwardsii(Hutton, 1875)) and south‐eastern Australia (J. novaehollandiaeHolthuis, 1963) are biologically similar and gene flow is possible. The variation between Australian populations, and overlap with the New Zealand population, in morphology, colour, and biochemical genetics, and the agreement in life‐history characters, make it impossible to distinguish animals from the two countries. The New Zealand and Australian populations of rock lobster should therefore be referred to as a single species, which by priority isJ.edwardsii.The long‐lived phyllosoma larval stage is widespread in the central and south Tasman Sea. Rates of any larval recruitment in New Zealand from animals spawned in Australia are likely to be variable because of variability in flow in the Tasman Sea, and because of the distance involved.

A specimen ofLycoteuthis lorigera(Steenstrup, 1875) (Cephalopoda: Teuthoidea), known only from the holotype, has been discovered off New Zealand. The presence of paired male genitalia and five ocular photophores is confirmed. Additional descriptions include arm tip and keel morphology, integumental photophores, and spermatophores. The specimen is deposited in the National Museum of New Zealand, catalogue no. NMNZ M89588.

Pagrus auratus(Bloch & Schneider) is redescribed on the basis of material from Australasia and Japan.PagrusCuvier is a senior synonym ofChrysophrys Qaoy & Gamard, ChrysophrisCuvier, andPagrosomusGill.Pagrus auratus(Bloch & Schneider) is a senior synonym ofP. major(Temminck & Schlegel) and the species is found widely in the Indo‐Pacific from New Zealand and Australia to China and Japan.

Virio angullarum, which is considered to have world‐wide distribution, is responsible for significant fish losses in commercial aquaculture. Samples of water, sediment, macroalgae, and salmon from selected New Zealand sites were tested for thepresence of Vibrio anguillarum. Thirty‐seven isolates were identified and characterised using biochemical, restriction endonuclease, plasmid, and serological analyses and compared with two northern hemisphere pathogenic strains ofV. anguillarum. New ZealandV. anguillarumisolates differed at the molecular level and antigenically from these pathogenic strains. The differences are interesting in terms of the taxonomy of this species and in the use of vaccines to controlV. anguillarum.
