Chemical and biological data were collected between 1947 and 1967 from Morton Dam and Upper Karori Reservoir, two artificial lakes which are part of the water supply of Wellington City, New Zealand.

Parasites are tabulated and briefly discussed for nine fish species from the Avon‐Heathcote estuary, Christchurch, New Zealand, 1965–66: sand flounder,Rhombosolea plebeia(Richardson); yellow‐bellied flounder,R. leporina(Hutton); common sole,Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae(Gunther); yellow‐eyed mullet,Aldrichetta forsteri(Cuvier & Valenciennes); kahawai,Arripis trutta(Bloch & Schneider); spotty,Pseudolabrus celidotus(Bloch & Schneider); cockabully,Tripterygion nigripenne(Cuvier & Valenciennes); common bully,Gobiomorphus basalis(Gray); and globefish,Spheroides richei(Freminville). The monthly incidence of fungal patches and myxosporidian syncytia on the twoRhombosoleaspp. is graphed, and suggests a tendency for infestation levels to decrease from winter to summer.

From two to four different sediment types were found in each of six offshore sampling areas in western Bay of Plenty, New Zealand. The size of the areas ranged from 7.7 km2to 64.6 km2, and the average depths ranged from 36 m to 168 m. Sediments may thus vary widely within areas plotted as homogeneous on large‐scale (1:200 000) sediment charts.

Results are presented from direct measurements of subsurface currents at ten coastal positions around the southern half of New Zealand, and from geomagnetic electrokinetograph measurements of surface currents between these positions. Currents on the continental shelf were predominantly tidal. Strongest mean flows were found on the continental slope adjacent to areas where the continental shelf is narrowest. The flow on the west coast of the South Island was southwards south of 44° S, with a maximum mean speed at a depth of 100 m of 0.64 m.s‐1. On the east coast of the South Island the flow was generally towards the north, with a maximum speed at a depth of 100 m of 0.21 m.s‐1near latitude 42° 30’ S.

Ultraviolet absorption spectra of fresh and marine waters along the southern coast of Viti Levu, Fiji, are recorded. Variations in the magnitude of the absorption from streams deyoid of human influence limit the use of such measurements as a sensitive index of organic pollution. However, where there is a significant difference between the absorption magnitudes of adjacent streams, these can be individually identified in coastal waters by concurrent absorption and salinity measurements. Such measurements characterise water masses in inshore waters, and indicate the origin of their freshwater components. Consequently the method has particular relevance in sea areas influenced by fresh waters with enhanced ultraviolet absorbance due to organic pollution.

Records of Tertiary fossil cetacea from New Zealand are revised. Probable proto‐squalodontid teeth from the McDonald Limestone Formation (Whaingaroan Stage, Lower Oligocene), Oamaru, are described, and represent the oldest cetacean remains found in New Zealand. This record demonstrates the probable extension of the Squalodontidae into the Lower Oligocene.

A fossil seal jaw from the Early Pleistocene (Wanganui Series; Hautawan Stage) of Napier, New Zealand, is identified as that of anOmmatophoca rossijuvenile of less than 1.8 m body length.

Seventy‐one schools of dolphins were sighted, in which four species were identified: common dolphin,Delphinus delphisLinn.; dusky dolphin,Lagenorhyn‐rhus obscurus(Gray); bottlenose dolphin,Tursiops truncatus(Montagu); and Hector's dolphin,Cephalorhynchus hectori(van Beneden). Of the 71 schools, 37 were of common dolphin, 12 of dusky, 12 of bottlenose, and 5 of Hector's; and 5 were mixed (4 schools of common + dusky; and 1 of these two + bottlenose).
