摘要:
Newly metamorphosedEvechinus chloroticus(Val.) were observed in three larval cultures 36, 30, and 28 days after fertilisation, indicating that the free swimming larval life may last about 1 month.

摘要:
Several sediment samples collected from the crest and slope of the Chatham Rise, and from the Chatham Islands, to the east of New Zealand, containGlobigerina linaperta‐Globorotalia increbescensforaminiferal faunas of upper Middle and middle Upper Eocene age. The foraminiferal faunas from the Chatham Islands, which includeRectuvigerina, Latibolivina, Dyocibicides, Discorbinella, Patellina, andWadella, indicate shallow‐water palaeodepths, probably equivalent to the outer shelf (50–150 m). A faunal assemblage from near the crest of the rise is likewise indicative of shallow water, although distinct differences in the benthonic foraminiferal ifauna suggest slightly deeper‐water biofacies than the Eocene of the Chatham Islands. In contrast, a fauna of similar age from 1,100 m on the southern slope of the Chatham Rise contains a much deeper‐water benthonic foraminiferal assemblage includingOsangularia, Vulvulina, Stilostomella, hispidocostateUvigerina, and smooth‐shelledBulimina, indicative of lower middle bathyal depths (1,500–2,500 m).

摘要:
The present classification of the New Zealand Onchidiidae into six species is shown to be incorrect. Three of the species,Onchidella patelloides(Quoy and Gaimard),O. irrorata(Gould),O. obscura(Plate), have insufficient differences for separation. They are reclassified under the species nameOnchidella nigricans(Quoy and Gaimard). BothO. flavescens(Wissel) andO. campbelli(Filhol) possess sufficient distinctive features for classification as species.

摘要:
Astrothrombus rugosus(Clark), hitherto known only from eastern Australia, is recorded here from off Kaikoura.Hemilepis abernethyi(Fell) andOphioceres marginata(Fell) are here regarded as junior subjective synonyms ofHemilepis norae(Benham) andOphioceres huttoni(Farquhar) respectively. Some New Zealand specimens of the cosmopolitan speciesOphiuroglypha irrorata(Lyman) differ in some respects from the “typical” form; they may prove to represent a new species.

摘要:
The temperature and salinity of the water at the ocean floor has been estimated by extrapolation of selected serial station data. Plots of extrapolated bottom water temperatures and salinities against bottom depth are presented, together with a chart showing the regional distribution of bottom water temperature. Discussion of the results in terms of water masses is offered.

摘要:
Three new species of calanoid copepod in the family Aetideidae are described, two inAetideopsisSars, 1903 and the third inBradyidiusGiesbrecht, 1897. OneAetideopsisspecies is from off South West Africa (south‐east Atlantic), the remaining species are from the east coast of New Zealand (south‐west Pacific). The genusPseudaetideusWolfenden, 1904 is merged withAetideopsis.

摘要:
Between, May 1966 and May 1967, 110 preserved samples of the phytoplankton of Lake Rotorua, New Zealand, were examined. Species and cell counts have been compared with data from Lakes Rotoiti (21 samples) and Ohakuri (36 net samples). Brief comparisons have also been made with the flora of two of the Wellington City reservoirs and the oxidation ponds at Mangere, Auckland. In Lake Rotorua the autumn, maximum was more pronounced than the spring maximum. Cell numbers inshore at Kawaha Point were consistently lower than those further out in the open lake. The phytoplankton is classified as a eutrophic formation of the diatom type, with Chlorophyceae as main subordinates. Dominants includeMelosira granulataRalfs (winter, spring, and autumn),Melosira distans(Ehr.) Kütz. (spring, summer, and autumn), andAsterionella formosaHass. (summer and autumn).

摘要:
Hydrological observations, mainly sea surface temperature measurements, are presented for the triangular region bounded by New Zealand, New Caledonia, and Western Samoa. The existence of the Tropical Convergence and the general seasonal variation of the surface parameters are discussed. A secondary convergence lying between the Subtropical Convergence and the Tropical Convergence is proposed and its relationship to the general surface circulation of the Tasman, Sea is examined.
