Research on New Zealand lakes over the past 25 years has focused mainly on eutrophication, measures of water quality, patterns, processes and production in plankton communities, and the spread and growth of submerged adventive macrophytes. Compared with most northern temperate lakes many New Zealand lakes show: low levels of inorganic nitrogen (N) and frequent N‐limitation of phyto‐plankton growth; diffuse, rather than point source, nutrient inflows; a great diversity of optical properties; unusual and often variable timing of plankton growth (attributed to the pervasive influence of New Zealand's oceanic climate); low productivity and biomass of zooplankton, which appear to be limited by food rather than predators; and sensitivity to invasion by adventive macrophytes. Notable research develop‐ments include improved methods of measuring nutrients, empirical predictive models that relate indices of eutrophication to nutrient loading, and significant advancements in methods of quantifying and measuring water colour and clarity.

The New Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research (NZJMFR)began publication at a time of expanding research activity on running freshwaters in many parts of the world. Since then it has provided an avenue for the publication of a wide range of regionally important studies. Subject areas have included taxonomy, biology of various plant and animal groups, water quality, parasitology, limnological methods, and community ecology. Many papers have reported the findings of research implications for conservation and management of aquatic habitats and biota; others have been concerned with the expansion and testing of ecological theory. In this review, the development of three broad themes within the pages of the journal is discussed: (1) water quality, land‐water interactions, and in‐stream communities; (2) habitat requirements of native fishes and invertebrates; and (3) developments in our understanding of stream ecosystem structure and function.

The story of the discovery of New Zealand's freshwater fishes and the development of research on both the indigenous fauna and the exotic fauna that support most recreational fisheries in New Zealand is traced. It forms the background to a more substantive account of the processes that took place over the past 25 years in the development of research, the projects that were undertaken, and the key people involved in these events. This 25‐year period, which equates with the life of theNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, is notable for the following fields of activity: a significant flowering of interest and knowledge of the hitherto poorly known indigenous fauna; the application of the in‐stream flow incremental methodology; increased research on eels prompted by the development of a commercial wild eel fishery; major investment in research on chinook salmon populations leading to the development of salmon aquaculture research and technologies; problems with the commercial capture of salmon at sea; proliferation of major environmental impact studies that were provoked by heavy pressure for exploitation of New Zealand's rivers for irrigation and hydroelectricity; research on the use of large herbivorous Asiatic carps for biological control of excessive growth of aquatic macrophytes and plankton blooms; and concerns about the impacts of exotic fishes on the indigenous fauna

TheNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research (NZJMFR)has published 1177 articles in 1967–90, of which 762 (65%) had marine and 415 (35%) had freshwater topics. Of the marine papers, 276 were oceanographic articles and 269 articles were on fisheries. The remaining 217 marine articles were on a variety of topics, but most involved descriptive studies, particularly on species’ life histories and taxonomy. Only 4% of all articles specifically examined species interactions and just 6% were experimental studies where hypotheses were tested.NZJMFRdoes not reflect the quality and quantity of experimental work done in coastal ecosystems by New Zealand scientists nor does it have the high content of quantitative and experimental studies of leading international marine journals. It has instead been a repository of mostly descriptive information about New Zealand marine species. As such it has played a valuable role in support of marine science by publishing many articles of primarily local content that are not appropriately placed in larger international journals.NZJMFRcould expand its role in marine science by encouraging more quantitative and experimental work, particularly as it relates to scientific questions concerning the management of marine resources and coastal areas.

The last quarter‐century has witnessed major advances in New Zealand oceanography, that have been driven by technological and intellectual change. In geological oceanography, realisation that plate tectonics was more than a working hypothesis changed older concepts about the ocean floor. This was particularly important to New Zealand marine science, as much of the plate boundary is offshore. In physical oceanography, recognition that ocean variability could be much stronger than the mean flows was very relevant to the south‐west Pacific. This is because the New Zealand Plateau strongly perturbs the generally west‐to‐east flow in the two major surface water masses surrounding the Plateau and, in turn, controls biological production. In biological oceanography, there has been a rapid transition from a descriptive to a process‐oriented approach in research before the descriptive phase was completed. As yet there is very little information on interannual variability; all types of spatial variability which occur in the New Zealand region may not yet have been defined. In chemical oceanography, modern techniques have allowed New Zealanders to place knowledge of this region in a global context and contribute to an improved understanding of chemical processes.
