摘要:
The late stage larvae of five common mytilid bivalves (Mollusca: Pelecypoda: Mytilacea) are described and provisionally identified asMytilus edulis aoteanus, Modiolus areolatus, Perna canaliculus, Xenostrobus pulex, andModiolarca impacta. All are readily distinguishable on the basis of larval shell features, including hinge structure. However, one common species,Aulacomya maoriana, was not discerned, and thus the identifications must remain tentative.

摘要:
Mesoproboloid.es excavatan. sp. is described and illustrated from material collected at Kaikoura, New Zealand. It differs most conspicuously from the other three known species of the genus in the posterodistally excavate coxa 4, the stout, blunt lobe distally on article 1 of antenna 1, the crenulate ventral margins of coxae 2–4, and the castellate posterior margin of article 2 of pereopod 5. The structure and distribution of minute organs, probably sensory receptors, densely distributed over much, of the integument was examined by scanning electron microscopy. The genusMesoproboloidesis now seen to be cold temperate‐subantarctic in occurrence.

摘要:
A system to record digitised echo information from echo sounders has been developed as part of a project to improve methods of estimating the abundance of fish stocks around New Zealand. The depth of echoes appearing at the echo‐sounder receiver is determined, followed by a sequence of samples of the echo envelope defining its shape. All data are digitised and recorded on a seven‐track digital magnetic tape recorder. The system is designed to preserve as much information about the echoes as possible. In contrast to other published systems designed to either “count” or “integrate” fish echoes, this system allows free choice of methods of analysis.

In batch cultures of Lake Taupo water, phosphorus was the nutrient limiting plant growth from January to June, and nitrogen took over this role from July to December. Chlorophyll production by algae was often stimulated by trace element additions, but it was uncertain whether total cytoplasmic production was also involved.

Chemical parameters (pH, Eh, carbon, Kjeldahl nitrogen, total phosphorus, 0.5M H2SO4‐extractable phosphorus, organic phosphorus, and water‐soluble phosphorus) were measured in the surface layers of sediments collected from various depths in Lakes Rotowhero, Okaro, Ngapouri, Rotokakahi, Okareka, Tikitapu, Okataina, and. Rotoma during October 1972. The sediments of the productive geothermal lake, Rotowhero, were markedly different from those of the cold‐water lakes: they had relatively low pH values, high carbon (mean 8.5%) and organic phosphorus (mean 4160 μg.g−1) concentrations, and very high total phosphorus concentrations (mean 4770 μg.g−1), probably as a result of enrichment by hot springs.

The water chemistry, flora, and fauna of Lake Rotokawa (38° 37.8’ S, 176° 11.2'E) was studied in 1975–76. The mean pH is 2.1 and thermal inflows may elevate the mean summer temperature of the surface waters 4.2°c above that of nearby cold water Lake Rotongaio (18.9°c). The temperature range of surface water was from 10.1 °c in winter to 23.1°c in summer. The major anions were SO42−679 g.m−3, and Cl‐ 314 g.m−3. Mean concentrations of major cations were Na+224 g.m−3, K+28.9 g.m−3, Ca2+13.3 g.m−3, and Mg2+2.6 g.m−3.

Aerobic heterotrophic bacteria were isolated from the water, mud,Elodea canadensis, and concentrated plankton of Lake Grasmere in inland Canterbury (43° 05’ S, 171° 45'E) at intervals between April 1969 and July 1971. The characteristics of 1567 isolates are described. The bacteria were assigned to the following groups: pseudomonads, pink‐pigmented pseudomonads,Alcaligenes/Achromobacter, flavobacteria,Cytophaga, Enterobacteriaceae,Aeromonas/Vibrio, Acinetobacter, Chromobacterium, coryneforms, Micrococcaceae, andBacillus. In the water the predominant bacteria in most of the samples were pseudomonads,Alcaligenes/Achromobacter, flavobacteria, and coryneforms. The bacterial population varied from year to year but at any one time the bacteria isolated from different areas of the lake were similar. Three mud samples were examined: only 20% of the bacteria isolated from a sample from the surface of the mud were Gram‐positive, but the other two samples from up to 5 cm deep in the mud included 49% and 74% Gram‐positive bacteria.Elodea canadensissupported an epiphytic population, predominantly of pseudomonads and flavobacteria, which was more stable than the population in the water. Enterobacteriaceae andAeromonas/Vibrio, although common at times in the water, were rarely isolated fromE. canadensis. Bacteria were enumerated from samples of concentrated plankton as the numbers of algae and zooplankton fluctuated. Less than 17% of the colony‐forming heterotrophic bacteria were in close association with the plankton. No particular group of bacteria became more common as the plankton populations died back.
