摘要:
During December 1966, observations were made on the hunting and feeding habits of an individual Weddell seal(Leptonychotes weddelliLesson) at a fishing hole in the ice above a depth of 300 m of water, near McMurdo Station. The seal appeared regularly every day, usually within 10 minutes of 1800 hours, and started feeding, sometimes for as long as 8 hours. The prey fish, once caught, was killed and eaten underwater, with the seal frequently surfacing to breathe. The fish caught varied in weight between 15 and 65 1b, and were all the same species, identified asDissostichus mawsoniNorman.

摘要:
The distribution and abundance of the Weddell seal(Leptonychotes weddelliLesson) in the fast ice and pack ice of the western Ross Sea, Antarctica, were investigated during 1967 and 1968 from icebreakers and accompanying helicopters. It was estimated that there were about 50,000 Weddell seals in the western Ross Sea between Cape Adare and McMurdo Sound. Weddell seals appear to breed mainly in the fast ice along the Victoria Land coast and less frequently in some nearby areas of pack ice. Fast ice is preferred to pack ice. Most Weddell seals in the pack ice were adults. General observations on the distribution of crabeater, leopard, and Ross seals are included.

摘要:
Eggs of rainbow trout(Salmo gairdneriRichardson) from five different lakes in North Island, New Zealand, were reared to discover whether they showed significant differences in survival which could be linked with DDT levels in the tissue. The muscle and gonads of pre‐breeding season fish and the parent females were assayed for DDT, as were the whole fry at the end of rearing. The highest DDT levels were found in fish from Lake Rerewhakaaitu, and eggs from these fish showed the least viability. Mortality was relatively low among eggs from fish out of the other lakes. Thus, DDT may possibly contribute to the high mortality found in eggs from Lake Rerewhakaaitu fish.

摘要:
A fish trap in the upper reaches of the South Branch stream, Canterbury, New Zealand, caught eels from December 1957 to October 1964. The downstream migrations of immature and adult eels of both New Zealand freshwater species (short‐finnedAnguilla australisand long‐finnedA. dieffenbachii)were recorded. These migrations showed a seasonal and a lunar periodicity, and the larger runs were also influenced by rainfall, water volume, or the passage of a depression. Seasonal peaks were marked for mature eels of both species, and for immatureA. australis, but not for immatureA. dieffenbachii.

摘要:
Seventeen species of algae, newly recorded between 1965 and 1968 from sewage treatment ponds around Auckland City, are described together with another 11 species found in eutrophic waters of the area. These latter natural waters are often of a transient nature and usually heavily polluted in some way.

摘要:
Within its range of variation, the small New Zealand bivalve,Notolepton antipodum(Filhol), includes two Recent and two fossil forms previously described as species. The animal is common around all New Zealand and some details of its ecology and habits are presented. The foot and mantle cavity of the living animal are described and its anatomy briefly outlined. The relationships ofNotoleptontoNeoleptonare discussed.

摘要:
Juvenile brachiopods attached in valve grooves or on valve ridges were counted on 20 large specimens of the corrugated rhynchonellid brachiopodNotosaria nigricans(Sowerby 1846). There were 606 small juveniles of undetermined species in the grooves and only 5 on ridges. Corresponding numbers for larger juveniles identified asWaltonia inconspicuu(Sowerby 1846) were 51 and 1.

摘要:
Namalycastis tiriteae, a new species of polychaete (Nereidae: Namanereinae) is described from a freshwater stream in New Zealand. Morphologically it possesses some features intermediate betweenNamalycastisHartman andNamanereisChamberlin as denned by Hartman (1959), but it is placed in the former on the basis of parapodial structure. Notes on physical and chemical conditions in the worm's habitat are also given.
