Sediments from the seabed off the eastern side of the North Island, New Zealand, are divided into 12 facies on the basis of grain size and mineralogy of the sand fraction. The facies are grouped into three types; modern detrital sediments, relict detrital sediments, and non‐detrital sediments. The sediments are described in terms of a modified Wentworth grain‐size scale and a modified Folk sediment classification.

Low stratus cloud was present over the cool water on the southern and western sides of the Subtropical Convergence east of New Zealand during two airborne infrared radiation thermometer surveys made on 2 April and 17–18 November 1969. The alignment of the northern boundary of such cloud with the Subtropical Convergence, and of cloud boundaries elsewhere with other areas having large horizontal temperature gradients, demonstrates that often such cloud boundaries can be useful indicators of surface temperature discontinuities.

An expression is derived for the Vaisala‐Brunt frequency in terms of the gradients of potential temperature and salinity. Modifications to facilitate calculations are suggested. A new method for expressing the specific volume distribution in terms of pressure, potential temperature, and salinity is also discussed.

Details are given of gut‐content analyses for nine fish species from the Avon‐Heathcote Estuary, Christchurch, New Zealand: sand flounder,Rhombosolea plebeia(Richardson); yellow‐bellied flounder,R. leporina(Hutton); common sole,Peltorhamphus novaezeelandiae(Gunther); yellow‐eyed mullet,Aldrichetta forsteri(Cuvier & Valenciennes); kahawai,Arripis trutta(Bloch & Schneider); spotty,Pseudolabrus celidotus(Bloch and Schneider); cockabully,Tripterygion nigripenne(Cuvier & Valenciennes); common bully,Gobiomorphus basalis(Gray); and globefish,Spheroides richei(Freminville). The percent occurrences of each food type recorded over Ihe sampling period (April 1965‐April 1966) for each species are compared. Monthly food tables are given for those species of which suitably large samples were obtained (sand flounder, yellow‐bellied flounder, common sole, yellow‐eyed mullet, and globefish). Where possible, the dietary occurrence of different food types is related to environmental and other factors observed or considered likely to influence food selection.

The effects on brown trout,Salmo truttaLinn., and bottom fauna of the Silver Stream, Otago, New Zealand following an accidental discharge of 55 litres of a dieldrin spray in September 1963 are described. The 24 h LC50 for dieldrin was found to be 0.016 ppm. Residue levels of dieldrin in skeletal muscles, liver, and brain were measured, using a gas‐liquid chromatograph, and minimum lethal levels of dieldrin found in these tissues were 1.0–2.0 ppm.

Lumbrineris mucronata(Ehlers, 1908) andL. sulcaticeps(Benham, 1927), (Polychaeta Errantia: Lumbrineridae), previously known only from the type descriptions, are redescribed from material from Australia and New Zealand. Both species are unusual in possessing multidentate maxillae IV and bidentate posterior hooks with almost circular hoods.

A species ofMoinafrom sewage ponds at Glenside, Wellington, New Zealand, is identifiable withMoina tenuicornisSars, 1896, and distinguishable fromMoina australiensisSars, 1896sensu stricto, in having rectangular sculpturing on the ephippium, ungrouped setae on the hind margin of the carapace, and in lacking a permanent supra‐ocular depression. Because of wide variation in some diagnostic characters, possibly both taxa are conspecific.
