The distribution and movements of sperm whales,Physeter catodon Linn., in the western South Pacific (latitudes 30–70° S, longitudes 150E‐150°W) are examined. An undetermined number of catches by nineteenth century American whaleships, 9,720 catches by pelagic fleets in 1961–70, and 427 sightings in 1967 are analysed and correlated with oceanographic data from Australian and New Zealand surveys.

Spawning grounds and spawning times of the sand flounder,Rhombosolea plebeia(Richardson), and the yellow‐belly flounder,Rhombosolea leporinaGunther, in the Hauraki Gulf are described. The occurrence of female fish at different stages of ovarian development at different stations during the year, the distribution of eggs in the plankton, and changes in ovary weight during the year were used as indicators of spawning grounds and spawning times.

Breeding seasons and sizes at first maturity for nine species of fish in the Avon‐Heathcote Estuary, Christchurch, New Zealand, were: sand flounder,Rhombosolea plebeia, mid‐winter to spring at 200 mm+; yellow‐bellied flounder,Rhombosolea leporina, winter and spring at 260 mm+; common sole,Peltorhamphus novaeieelandiae, did not breed in the estuary but reached first maturity at 220 mm +; yellow‐eyed mullet,Aldrichetta forsteri, spawned twice a year, winter and summer, at 220 mm +; kahawai,Arripis trutta, bred outside the estuary at 520–540 mm +; spotty,Pseudolabrus celidotus, spring to autumn at 200 mm for males and 160 mm for females; cockabully,Tripterygion nigripenne, spring and early summer at 52–57 mm +; common bully,Gobiomorphus basalis, spring and early summer at 45–50 mm+; and globefish,Speroides richei, spring to autumn at 147 mm + for males and 120 mm + for females. The successive stages in gonad development are described for these species.

The spawning season ofHaliotis irisMartyn, as indicated by a gonad index and examination of ovaries, was late summer to autumn at Kaikoura, New Zealand, in 1967–68. In contrast,H. australisGmelin spawned twice, once in the spring and again in the late summer to autumn. Both patterns are typical of haliotids. But in the 1968–69 year neither species spawned; full gonads with apparently ripe eggs were maintained through the winter of 1969. No reason for this inconsistency can be offered.Haliotis irisat Taylors Mistake, 154 km south, followed essentially the same pattern as KaikouraH. iristhrough 1968, but spawned slightly in autumn 1969.

Hydrological observations and current measurements around northern New Zealand made in March 1970 and 1971 demonstrated a predominantly northwest going coastal current off the west coast north of Reef Point; this current is opposite in direction to the previously described West Auckland Current, which thus requires redescription. A prominent upwelling zone between the Three Kings Islands and Cape Reinga generally results from the flow around northern New Zealand striking the south‐western edge of the continental shelf, although some contribution from the north‐west is possible on occasions. Upwelling is enhanced by southerly winds which produce divergence in the currents. Weaker upwelling observed along the west coast of the Auckland Peninsula is probably wind‐induced and may be enhanced near Reef Point.

Analyses of trajectories of drift cards, released over a 2‐year period April 1969‐Aprit 1971, and hydrological observations at nine stations all occupied in and near Tasman Bay within 19 hours on 4–5 March 1970, show variable surface flows, which are strongly influenced by wind. Water characteristics are altered by insolation and coastal run‐off. The exchange times for the water in Tasman Bay were calculated for differing wind speeds.

The mercury content of sediments and water in the Wairua (Wairoa) River, Northland, and of molluscs from the estuary of the river was determined to establish the extent of natural dispersion of mercury from deposits at the source of the river at Puhipuhi. The mercury content per gram wet weight of cockles,Chione stutchburyi, (0.032 ppm); rock oysters,Crassostrea glomerata, (0.081 ppm); pipiPaphies australe, (0.019 ppm); and green‐lipped mussels,Perna canaliculus, (0.017 ppm) was compared with that of specimens of the same species from other areas where presumably only background concentrations exist. Mercury could be detected in sediments at least 35 km from the deposits, but in water only up to about 8 km. Normal background levels were established for the soft parts and individual organs of the four species of mollusc investigated; of the molluscs found in the estuary of the Wairua River, onlyC. glomeratahad anomalous amounts of mercury, but whether this indicates abnormally high mercury levels in the environment is unknown, because many other factors still need to be evaluated. Mercury levels of all molluscs were well below the generally accepted safety level of 0.5 ppm for fish for human consumption.

A large fossil limpet from the Isolated Hill Limestone (Oligocene) of Mason River, Marlborough, is described asPatella (Scutellastra) kermadecensis auroraen. subsp., a subspecies of the living Kermadec giant limpet. Thus this limpet is not a primary endemic species at the Kermadec Islands, but a surviving relict population of a species formerly more widespread during the Tertiary. Such relict populations in the Indo‐West Pacific imply that the tropics were not immune from the effects of Pleistocene climatic fluctuations.
