摘要:
This article reports the main results of a study which attempted to understand if and how British companies are striving to become world class. Our research suggests some good news and some bad news for companies aspiring to become world class leaders. The good news is that world class status is possible — some of our sample firms have indeed achieved world class performance in their key activities. Furthermore, this group of leaders includes both large and small firms. The bad news is that many others have failed to grasp the opportunities available and have either settled for lesser goals or found the obstacles to progress so severe as to be seemingly insurmountable. The article discusses what we believe are the key ingredients of the journey towards world class competitivenes

摘要:
This article looks at the role of competitions in promoting industrial competitiveness by examining the example of British Design Awards. Competitions can act as a benchmark in good design practice. Although British Design Awards were found to be concentrated in just a few sectors of manufacturing this could be explained in terms of those sectors' size, commitment to design, and their good international trading performance. This suggests that the awards did indeed make suitable benchmarks. Although this is a prerequisite for competitions to act as a stimulus to competitiveness, it should not be regarded as sufficient; competitions need to be staged within a more general strategy aimed at the diffusion of good design practice.

摘要:
How securely democratic, integrated and prosperous Russia will be in twenty‐five years' time depends very much on the success of steps taken in the near future ‐ against the background of the deplorable events in Chechnya ‐ to sustain political reforms. Ultimately, these goals will entail the involvement of Russia cooperatively with an enlarged European Union and with

摘要:
China's long‐term impact on the world economy is bound to be enormous in terms of economic influence, investment opportunity and trade. Its future strength is predicated on its current social revolution in which, while the political system has not changed, state and people have exchanged roles. In future, the system is bound to change either by peaceful transition or by upheaval. Its economic power should not be seen as a threat but its impact on the environment may well b

摘要:
The minimum wage is high on the political agenda both in Britain and the US. Despite much research, one aspect of minimum wage definition has received little attention‐non‐wage benefits. In this article, Mary Campbell argues that non‐wage benefits like employers' pension contributions and profit‐sharing should be included in any definition of minimu
