摘要:
In this paper we study the allocation of production services (e.g., maintenance) to machining centers in a job shop when there is a limited amount of resources for such services. Different classes of jobs go through the shop. A job class is characterized by its route, its processing requirements, and its priority. The problem we address is how to optimally allocate production services (the resources) to machining centers so as to minimize the total Work-In-Process in the entire system. In order to analyze this problem we model the job shop as an open queueing network. Assuming certain relationships between performances of machining centers (i.e., speeds) and the amounts of resources allocated, we present methods for allocating the resources to the individual machining centers optimally.

摘要:
Statistical analysis of operation injury experience represent a rational method of identifying the operations for which ergonomic intervention will reap benefits. This paper presents statistical methods for the analysis of injury severity rates. Approximate expressions for upper one-sided tolerance limits on the severity rate are presented. Illustrations using injury data from a large manufacturing organization are presented.

摘要:
A Neural Network (NN)-based Production Control System (PCS) for a Flexible Manufacturing Cell (FMC), operating in a highly random produce-to-order environment is presented. The proposed PCS chooses periodically, on the basis of the current state of the system, the most appropriate scheduling rule, out of several predetermined ones. The proposed PCS is based on multi-layer NNs, one for each competing scheduling rule, that predict the FMC's performance. The NNs are retrained periodically. The performance of the proposed NN-based PCS was tested by simulation of two different FMC configurations. The NN-based PCS has performed significantly better than a decision-tree-based PCS and a single-rule-based PCS.

摘要:
Simulation sensitivity analysis is an issue faced by simulation practitioners analyzing complex systems. This paper presents steady-state simulation expected response gradient and Hessian estimators, using harmonic analysis. These estimators exploit the orthogonality of the harmonic basis and require just one simulation run, independent of the number of input parameters. Convergence properties and implementation issues for the estimators are discussed. Examples are included to illustrate the performance of the estimators.

摘要:
One standard approach for estimating a subjective distribution is to elicit subjective quantiles from a human expert. However, most decision-making models require a random variable's moments and/or distribution function instead of its quantiles. In the literature little attention has been given to the problem of converting a given set of subjective quantiles into moments and/or a distribution function. We show that this conversion problem is far from trivial, and that the most commonly used conversion procedure often produces large errors. An alternative procedure using “Tocher's curve” is proposed, and its performance is evaluated with a wide variety of test distributions. The method is shown to be more accurate than a commonly used procedure.

摘要:
We study a make-to-order manufacturing system consisting of several processing centers that are subject to failures and repairs. Our objective is to build a model that can be used as a tool for negotiating the delivery date and the price of a certain upcoming order. The model takes into account the congestion level of the shop floor at the time the order is placed. Based on the workload of the processing centers, the model splits the order into lots and assigns them to the processing centers so as to determine the order completion time associated with the minimum operating cost. The efficiency of the solution method for the model allows real-time decision-making while negotiating the price and delivery date of the order to be placed. Since the decisions are made based on a snapshot of the congestion level at the shop floor, using this model will reduce the conflict between the marketing and the production activities in manufacturing organizations.

摘要:
This note is a complement to the paper by Hoeft and Palekar [1] which describes the problem of cutting polygonal shapes from large plates of metal or glass. More specifically, we focus on polynomial time solvability for a number of subproblems of the more general plate-cutting problem. A primary result of this note is the polynomial time solvability for the plalecutting problem with a given order and convex polygons.
