摘要:
This paper outlines the scientific underpinnings of Industrial Engineering and proposes an approach to educating the Industrial Engineer based on this engineering science. The proposed definition of the “Industrial Engineering science” rests on the premise that IE is made up of three main functional areas: (1) production engineering, (2) operational science, and (3) ergonomics/human factors engineering. This paper outlines the various IE activities that fall into these three functional categories, and attempts to show the relationships of those areas to six underlying science bases; namely, (1) Industrial Engineering sciences, (2) general engineering sciences, (3) life sciences, (4) physical sciences, (5) behavioral and social sciences, and (6) mathematics.

This paper describes a detailed empirical comparison of a 3-D Static Strength Prediction Model with a set of strength performance data. The data were acquired from 29 male volunteers who performed four different static exertions (e.g., lift, push-down, pull-in, and push-out), with one hand and both hands using a force cell located at six different positions around the body. It is shown that the biomechanical static strength prediction logic is extremely sensitive to errors in postures and somewhat sensitive to errors in anthropometry used as inputs to the model. It does appear that with good postural data the model is capable of predicting a population's mean static strengths reasonably well.

摘要:
This article develops optimal ordering policies for a group of inventory items when a supplier offers a one-time discount for the group. The objective of such policies is to reduce total inventory costs within a firm's warehouse space or funds-availability constraints. Several models are developed to reflect the characteristics of suppliers' offers and the models are analyzed using both Lagrangian and linear programming methods.

摘要:
A class of flexible machining and assembly systems is considered. In this class, each end item is assembled from a number of components. Each component undergoes a sequence of operations on various machines. The assembly structure of all items is flat. At least for some operations on some machines, setups are not negligible. Aggregation of constraints and items is employed and the problem of aggregate capacitated lot-size scheduling is formulated. Three different approaches for efficiently solving the resulting mixed binary programming problem are presented and discussed. The first is based on Lagrangian relaxation, die second on a mixed-integer network flow reformulation, while the third is based on a sub-linearization scheme.

摘要:
The rating ability of 28 industrial analysts was determined in terms of rating accuracy and consistency through the use of rating films. The analysts with some form of performance rating training rated significantly more accurately than those without such training. In terms of rating accuracy, on-the-job performance rating training proved significantly superior to formal or classroom training. The analysts with 40 or more hours of time study/performance rating training rated significantly more consistently than those with no such training. The rating consistency of the technology or engineering degree holders was significantly better than the high school diploma holders. The age, industrial experience and work measurement experience had no effect on the analyst's rating ability. The importance of on-the-job performance rating training is emphasized to ensure proficiency in performance rating in industry.

We determine the throughput, the maximum rate at which a miniload automated storage and retrieval system can process requests, as a'function of the dimension of the storage racks, the speed of the s/r machine and the speed of die picker. As a byproduct, we determine the distribution function of me travel time for a storage/retrieval machine that stores one container and retrieves another container (“dual command cycle”) before returning to the I/O point. Our emphasis is on obtaining closed-form, computable expressions.

This paper describes a solution technique for a general class of problems referred to as aggregate planning and master scheduling problems. The technique is also applicable to multi-item single level capacitated lot sizing problems. The solution technique presented here is a heuristic that is practical for large problems e.g. 9 products and 36 periods. We have tested it for problems with varying number of time periods, number of products, setup costs, holding costs, overtime costs and capacity levels. For those problems that we could solve exactly using a branch and bound algorithm, the solutions produced by the heuristic were all within 1 % of optimality. For problems that we could not solve exactly, we are able to compute a lower bound on the optimal cost. Using the bound we are able to show that our heuristic solutions were within 2.93% of optimality on the average. Except for those problems having very high setup cost or problems with extreme seasonality, the algorithm produced solutions that were within 1 % of optimality on average.

摘要:
An algorithm for the verification of composite position tolerances is proposed and its computer implementation is described. It is shown that a prevalent graphical verification method does not adequately reflect the standard. Composite position tolerance requirements are mathematically formulated as a non-linear optimization problem with a linear objective function and quadratic constraints. The method of feasible directions is used as the basis for an efficient computer implementation. Its performance is evaluated under various test conditions as well as against a simplex pattern search.
