摘要:
This paper discusses a Group Technology (GT) and Computer Aided Process Planning (CAPP) installation at JLG Industries, Inc., an international manufacturer and marketer of specialized hydraulic machinery. An efficient architecture for the design, development and implementation of the system is presented along with system design requirements and characteristics. A GT software shell is described, and for the architecture that is defined, a formal model of the process planning system is developed. The model is used as the basis for the creation of a generic semi-generative CAPP system. Implementation of the model along with experience with the system is included. Run time examples of the system are provided to illustrate the features of the system.

摘要:
Product changeover is becoming increasingly critical in planning assembly capacity which may be manual or automated with supporting part-holding and conveying devices. The basic choice is between assembly systems that are more product-specific, such as dedicated assembly heads, and those that are relatively flexible, such as manual or robotic systems. A rigid system would require frequent transitions as product variety increases, and may nullify any scale economies. A flexible system, on the other hand, though more expensive, can incorporate product changeovers more easily and would therefore require less transitions, creating scope economies. A quantitative analysts to study such interactions of system parameters with a view to developing understanding and procedures for dynamic planning of flexible assembly capacity is the objective of this paper.

摘要:
This paper addresses the joint facilities design problem of determining both demand and capacity with stochastic demand arrivals and stochastic processing throughput. Using a simpleM/M/1 queueing model of a profit maximizing firm, we link marketing and production decision variables by recognizing appropriate congestion costs, and show that coordinated decision-making provides results superior to making demand and capacity decisions sequentially. Sensitivity analysis indicates that the model is robust with respect to its assumptions and parameters. An example illustrates the approach and demonstrates the application of the model.

摘要:
Research on the industrial robot selection problem (RSP) has received increased attention in the past decade. In this paper, RSP models are reviewed and classified. The strengths and weaknesses of the different approaches to the RSP are summarized. A tabular framework is used to summarize the reviewed RSP models. For quick and easy reference, the table categorizes the models by application, solution approach, robot attributes considered, and selection criteria. We suggest directions for future research

摘要:
The three-station serial line is a fundamental building block of many complex production systems. In this paper we develop methods for predicting the throughput of unbalanced three-station serial lines. We model the variability of processing times using a variety of probability distributions that spans the range of variabilities encountered in practice. We develop procedures for approximating throughput, for any allocation of total mean processing time, based on the throughput of a small number of easily analyzed cases.

摘要:
Construction of housing in the United States is highly decentralized. There is an increasing use of manufactured components and modules constructed off-site at a manufacturing facility and assembled at die building site. However, there has been little use of modern manufacturing processes and controls. In an effort to develop energy efficient, affordable industrialized housing, a total engineering design approach is needed. This study uses a concurrent engineering approach to examine the production of an essential component in industrialized housing, a manufactured exterior structural wall panel. In particular, we apply Quality Function Deployment to fully integrate the customer's requirements. This paper focuses on the identification and prioritization of those customer requirements. We integrate the Analytic Hierarchy process with QFD to establish a framework for prioritizing customer requirements.

摘要:
In many manufacturing settings, an item may require repair at one stage before it is passed on to the next manufacturing operation. This paper examines a single-stage manufacturing system in which all items require a processing operation, they are then inspected, and a fraction (1-p) require rework. Two priority-based scheduling rules, motivated by the goal of minimizing the mean flow time in the repair system, are considered- The LST of the flow time PDF for a random arrival is developed for each priority rule. From the LST, the mean and variance of customer flow times can be obtained. Computational experience with the two rules is reported along with a discussion of the preferability of each rule when both flow time mean and variance are considered as performance measures.

摘要:
This note incorporates tool life variability in the geometric programming formulation of machining economics problems by transforming the probability of tool failure while machining a part to a function of the cutting variables for both Markovian and non-Markovian tool failure processes. Numerical examples show that the stochastic nature of tool life cannot be ignored, since it results in different optimal cutting variable values compared to the deterministic tool life case.
