AbstractUsing immunohistochemical staining with the monoclonal antibodies (mAb) of squamous cell carcinoma‐related antigens (SCC‐RAg), the expression of SCC‐RAg in erythrodermic epidermis, which included senile erythroderma following eczema, atopic erythroderma, psoriatic erythroderma, and Sézary syndrome was examined. In senile erythroderma and atopic dermatitis, the most intense staining with SCC‐RAg mAb was evident in the upper epidermis. The cytoplasm of epidermal cells showed particularly strong staining. Although serum SCC‐RAg in the Sézary syndrome was not as high as in other erythroderma patients, staining with SCC‐RAg mAb was relatively strong in the upper epidermis. However, in psoriatic erythroderma cases with severe skin conditions, staining was weakly positive and diffuse throughout the entire epidermis. AbstractFifty patients with acute urticaria who visited within a week after the onset were interviewed and the history around the onset of urticaria was carefully taken. It was known that the majority of the patients had experienced some symptoms suggestive of infection. The patients were followed up for a year to determine the last efflorescence. It was disclosed that 43 cases were cured within two weeks and 5 other cases were cured between 2 weeks and 3 months. The remaining 2 cases persisted over a year.These results seem to suggest that urticaria is an immunologically erroneous reaction to foreign body innoculation, a large majority of which is acute infection.

AbstractExperiments on the variation of electrical conductance on sorption and desorption of water were performed on the skin of 34 subjects: 17 ichthyosis vulgaris patients and 17 normal subjects, matched for age and gender, under different ambient conditions. AbstractEarlier results (the absence or a decreased level of prealbumin [PA] in the serum, a higher proportion of PA‐bearing lymphocytes as antigen‐binding cells, and the presence of PA in the eluate of lymphocytes in patients with drug allergy) permitted the conclusion that, besides its other relevant functions, PA may also behave as a hapten carrier protein.The lymphocyte transformation test (LTT) involving measurement of3H‐thymidine uptake was therefore carried out with sulphadiminidum (SA) alone, with the PA‐SA complex, and with the albumin‐SA complex in patients with proven (3 cases) or suspected (63 cases) sensitivity to SA.In all 3 cases with proven drug allergy to SA and in 5 of the 63 suspect cases, the LTT was positive in response to both the drug alone and to the PA‐SA complex (The albumin‐SA complex gave positivity in only one case). In 5 of the 63 suspect cases, the LTT was positive only in response to the PA‐SA complex. AbstractRecalcitrant erythema on the face of 21 adult patients with atopic dermatitis was histologically examined. All patients had been applying topical corticosteroids to the facial erythema for three years or more.The histopathology of the recalcitrant facial erythema was not homogeneous. AbstractAn 84‐year‐old woman had a squamous cell carcinoma on her left thigh. Before operation, half of the tumor mass was irradiated with a microwave at 43°C for an hour. After the hyperthermia, the tumor mass was removed, and the DNA instability was investigated by microfluorocytometric measurement of the cells stained with pararosaniline‐Feulgen after hydrolysis with 2N HCl at 30°C. The kinetic parameters k1, which is the rate constant for the generation of an apurinic acid, k2, which is the rate constant for the depolymerization of the apurinic acid and which reflects the degree of DNA instability for acid hydrolysis, and y0, which is the theoretical value of the single‐stranded DNA present initially and reflects the degree of DNA damage, were determined by a computer fitting of the Bateman function to the hydrolysis curve plotting of the fluorescence intensity of the pararosaniline‐Feulgen staining the apurinic acid against the different hydrolysis times. The parameter values y0and k2of the cells treated by hyperthermia were much higher than those of the cells treated without hyperthermia. AbstractTwo cases of pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE) were reported. Biochemical studies of collagen, glycosaminoglycan, and elastin content were performed using skin specimens from affected lesions. Hydroxyproline content was reduced approximately 46% and 24% in cases 1 and 2, respectively. The reduction in collagen content resulted from the reduction in the lower dermis, not from that in the upper dermis. Glycosaminoglycan content in PXE was also decreased, with a slight increase in the ratio of hyaluronic acid to dermatan sulfate. Isodesmosine content in PXE was increased 3.2‐ and 2.2‐fold in cases 1 and 2, respectively.
