AbstractRecent studies of an endemic occurrence of chronic arsenism in a limited area on the southwest coast of Taiwan are focusing on its cytokeratin analysis in hopes of tracing the disease's biochemical expression. Specimens were obtained from uninvolved skin and arsenical cancers including Bowen's disease, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma. In this study, we used two‐dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis to analyse cytokeratin expression. Progressive alterations in cytokeratin expression were found in various skin lesions. These include an expression of K16 in the uninvolved skin; K16 and K6 in Bowen's disease; and K16, K6 and K17 in squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma. In addition, we found that the K1 isoelectric variants shifted to more acidic forms with the complete absence of K1 in basal cell carcinoma. K16 expression in uninvolved skin indicates that it is nevertheless in a hyperproliferative status. K17 was expressed in squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma, but not in Bowen's disease. The progressive impairment of phosphorylation of K1 and K2 in the process of chronic arsenism provides us with a suitable model for studying the biological significance of phosphorylation in intermediate filaments during chemical carcinogenesi

AbstractWe developed a method for organ culture of mouse vibrissal hair follicles in a serum‐free medium. Cultures conducted at 31°C in 95% O2‐5% CO2were found to be suitable for the follicles, with several findings of considerable interest pertaining to hair growth. During the 96 h culture period, the length of the isolated follicles significantly increased; the hair bulb cells maintained their normal morphology; and DNA and protein synthesis within the bulb increased time‐dependently. Furthermore, autoradiography showed that3H‐thymidine‐labeling was localized in the matrix cells below Auber's critical line in the hair bulb;3H‐leucine‐labeling was found in the epithelial region; and35S‐cysteine‐labeling was detected in the cortex of hair, particularly in the keratogenous zone. AbstractSerum interleukin 6 (IL‐6) was measured in patients with pustulosis palmaris et plantaris by a fluorescent sandwich enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) method. Increased production of IL‐6 was observed in 8 cases out of 10 showing numerous pustules in their active stage. Six cases were measured before and after tonsillectomy, and statistically significant reduction in the levels of IL‐6 paralleled an improvement in the disease activity. AbstractClinical and experimental studies of pressure under elastic bandages are performed in order to assess their effectiveness in compressing wounds to prevent edema in burn wounds. In experimental studies, pressure decreased slowly over a day when applied with a tension of 250 grams to a limb model without a pad. However, pressure decreased a little more rapidly when applied using a pad, especially when the pad became wet. In clinical studies among patients, the pressure under the elastic bandage decreased more rapidly over time than it did in the experimental studies.From those findings, although harmful side effects such as circulatory disturbances will not occur when an elastic bandage is applied on the limb with a tension of 250 grams, it is very difficult to maintain the initial level of pressure correctly and control the pressure for even the duration of a single day clinically.

AbstractThe term “Buschke‐Loewenstein tumor” has been used for tumors with exophytic, wart‐like excrescences in the anogenital region. This broadly includes giant condyloma acuminatum and verrucous carcinoma. We report a 44‐year‐old Japanese man with a giant condyloma acuminatum Buschke‐Loewenstein tumor on the right femoinguinal area. The lesion was a huge grape‐like nodule composed of multiple small nodules, reaching 135 × 65 × 40 mm in size.Histologically, it showed a regularly acanthotic papilloma with numerous koilocytes in the upper squamous and granular layers. Ultrastructural findings included gradual differentiation from basal cell layers to uppermost corneocytes without disorganized relationships in the epithelial‐stromal junction or cellular atypia.
