ABSTRACTOnychomycosis caused byCandidais often accompanied by paronychia. Not only the morbid changes in the nailplate caused by the true parasitism byCandidabut also the secondary changes in the nail due to candidial paronychia are sometimes handled as though they were candidial onychia.Onychomycosis caused by candidial infection,i.e., nail candidiasis, is entirely different in its pathogenetic respects from the secondary ungual changes due to candidial paronychia. The reason why both are classified together as candidial onychia appears attributable to the ambiguous characterization of their clinical and pathological features.We therefore undertook a statistical analysis of 765 cases of candidiasis who visited the Dermatological Department of Tokyo University Hospital during the period from 1969 to 1980. Of these, 25 cases of nail candidiasis (primary onychia) were sorted out, followed by clinical and pathological examinations.The results showed that nail candidiasis appeared in 14.3% of the candidial paronychia and onychia cases, and no significant differences from candidial paronychia were attributable to age or sex. On the other hand, it was found that nail candidiasis was clinically characterized by subungual hyperkeratosis, while the fungal element appeared histopathologically in the lower part of the nailplate, taking an abnormal parasitic form similar to that in dermatophytes.The pathogen causing nail candidiasis wasCandida albicansand was resistant to various therapies. The only effective therapy was oral administration of Ketoconazole.Nail candidiasis is often accompanied by underlying diseases like SLE which result in cellular immunodeficiency. While chronic mucocutaneous candidiasis occurs with a background of congenital cellular immunodeficiency toCandida, nail candidiasis appears to have an acquired immunodeficiency as the background.In short, nail candidiasis can be interpreted as a candidiasis which occurs when the host/parasite relations are disturbed. In this sense, it appears that nail candidiasis can be regarded as a dermadrome which reflects cellular immunodeficiency of host.

ABSTRACTWe observed age‐related changes in Meissner's corpuscles, one type of cutaneous sensory receptor, in subjects ranging from their 20s to their 70s.Nerve fibers in Meissner's corpuscles were observed by the silver impregnation technique. They changed morphologically with aging. Meissner's corpuscles are supplied by one to four myelinated nerve fibers, most frequently one or two, from the lower portion, and, most densely, from the basal portion. By morphometric analyses, the size of Meissner's corpuscles was found to increase with aging, but to decrease during the 70s. Furthermore, this size change depends upon the size of the lamellar cells in the direction of the long axis, and, among subjects in their 60s, in the direction of the short axis as well.The shape of Meissner's corpuscles becomes more complicated with age due to twisted alterations. ABSTRACTIn a double‐blind trial, patients with bilateral common warts of the extremities were treated at weekly intervals with intralesional injections of either human fibroblast interferon or placebo. ABSTRACTEchographic differentiation between clinically similar, nodular lesions of the dermis and subcutaneous fat was done in an attempt to open a new field of ultrasonic histopathology.Sector B‐mode echography with a 10 MHz transducer was done on 87 patients with nodular lesions in the dermis and subcutaneous fat, and the echograms were compared with microscopic findings. These consisted of nevus pigmentosus in 10, neurofibroma in 10, steatocystoma multiplex in 4, epidermoid cyst in 30, cavernous hemangioma in 4, lipoma in 10, panniculitis in 14 and malignant lymphoma in 5 patients.Neurofibroma and steatocystoma multiplex were as echolucent as lipoma, while nevus pigmentosus and epidermoid cyst were less echolucent. Small internal echoes were observed within the echolucent mass in 15 of 30 lesions of epidermoid cysts. ABSTRACTPenetration through excised human epidermis of six phenolic, four benzyl, two salicylate and six cinnamic compounds was examined. A considerable difference in penetration of the compounds tested was observed. Benzyl alcohol penetrated most rapidly. Solubility in water and octanol of each compound was studied. All compounds were freely soluble in octanol. A high correlation between water solubility and percent penetration through human epidermis of compounds was observed. The percent penetration of compounds was not related to allergenic potency.

ABSTRACTThe influence of 5 liquid, 6 cosmetic and 2 ointment vehicles on the penetration of benzyl alcohol, isoeugenol and methyl isoeugenol through human epidermis was studied. Benzyl alcohol penetrated most rapidly from almost all vehicles. Among liquid vehicles, liquid paraffin provided the best penetration for the 3 compounds. As the ratio of water to ethanol increased in ethanol/water solutions, the penetration of each compound increased. Among cosmetic and ointment vehicles, lotion and milky lotion afforded maximum penetration of each compound with the exception of milky lotion in the case of benzyl alcohol. Macrogol ointment provided the poorest penetration results for the 3 compounds tested.

ABSTRACTThe distribution of DNP groups on cells taken from draining lymph nodes of guinea pigs 12 hours after painting the skin with DNCB was examined by scanning immunoelectron microscopy using antibody directed against DNP groups with bacteriophage T4 as a visual marker. The studies showed that DNP groups were distributed on the surface of the cells, demonstrating some differences in distribution pattern among the cells. The incidence of cells on which DNP groups were detected was approximately 60% in the normal animals, higher than that detected by a previous immunofluorescent study. The incidence was markedly reduced to approximately 3% by pretreatment with tolerogen, DNBSO3Na. DNP groups were detected on the surface of the cells forming both rabbit red cell rosettes and complement coated red cell rosettes. It is suggested that DNCB penetrates through the skin into the lymphatics carrying lymph from the painted site and combines with cell membrane components in the peripheral lymphoid system.

ABSTRACTTo investigate the influence of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) on porphyrin metabolism, Wistar rats were orally administered KC‐400. The mean value of liver/body weight ratio in normal rats was 3.86%, with a range of 3.44% to 5.22%. Their mean blood protoporphyrin level was 23.3μg/dl packed cell volume (p.c.v.), with a range of 11.8 to 64.4μg/dl p.c.v., and their mean liver protoporphyrin level was 0.17μg/gm wet weight, with a range of 0.03 to 0.40μg/gm wet weight.A feed containing KC‐400 (140–160 ppm) was given for 2 to 20 weeks to 20 rats. The mean value of liver/body weight ratio was 5.00%, with a range of 3.80% to 6.16%. The mean erythrocyte protoporphyrin level was 47.4μg/dl p.c.v., with a range of 19.7 to 83.2μg/dl p.c.v., and the mean liver protoporphyrin level was 0.36μg/gm wet weight, with a range of 0.04 to 0.67μg/gm wet weight. The liver coproporphyrin level showed abnormalities in 2 of 20 rats fed the feed containing KC‐400, with values of 0.71 and 9.89μg/gm wet weight, respectively. After administration of KC‐400 feed for 43 weeks, the mean value of blood coproporphyrin level rose to 32.1μg/dl p.c.v., with a range of 11.4 to 54.6μg/dl p.c.v. The mean erythrocyte protoporphyrin level was 74.3μg/dl p.c.v., with a range of 49.5 to 102.1μg/dl p.c.v. The mean liver coproporphyrin level was elevated to 5.15μg/gm wet weight, with a range of 0.45 to 9.48μg/gm wet weight, and the mean liver protoporphyrin level was 0.65μg/gm wet weight, with a range of 0.43 to 9.88μg/gm wet weight. Thus, there was an increase in both liver porphyrin and coproporphyrin following KC‐400 feeding. Liver cells in the rats with abnormal porphyrin levels exhibited a red fluorescence. From these results, we can deduce that KC‐400 may induce abnormalities in porphyrin metabolism, when it is fed orally for a long period of time. These abnormalities in porphyrin metabolism

摘要:
ABSTRACTTwo patients with nevus fuscocaeruleus over the back and simultaneous pain were reported. Although the significance of this association remains to be clarified, it is interesting because the dermal melanocytes and nerves are of neuroectodermal origin. Histology of one case revealed findings consistent with those of pilar neurocristic hamartoma (1). Electron microscopy revealed dermal melanocytes in the neighborhood of a nerve. Photographic studies confirmed Morikawa's view (2) that the location of melanin may be examined by reflection ultraviolet photography, conventional photography, and infrared photography.
