ABSTRACTLight microscopically, reticulum fibers and argyrophilic materials were found by reticulum staining, and lipid droplets by Sudan III staining, around the blood vessels and in the interstices of the smooth muscle fibers of tunica dartos; toluidine blue staining of thick sections of Epon‐embedded tissue revealed poorly‐stained, glass‐like, amorphous hyalin with configuration of collagen fibers in the same areas and hyalinized muscle fibers in tunica dartos.Electron microscopy disclosed that multiplication of the basal lamina and its transition to the fibrogranular amorphous material, probably a hyalin substance, was seen around the true smooth muscle cells of tunica dartos and also around the blood vessels. In addition, dilated rough‐surfaced endoplasmic reticulums with fibrogranular content were often observed in the endothelial cells, pericytes, and smooth muscle cells, with Golgi apparatus in some parts.These findings suggest that hyalinosis cutis et mucosae is due to the accumulation and invasion of hyalin into the normal collagen fibers due to a genetic abnormality in the synthetic processes of smooth muscle cells, vascular endothelial cells, pericytes and some fibroblast‐like connective tissue cells. In my speculation, the hyalin substance in this disease may be normal collagen invaded by basal lamina glycoprotein, most probably involving type III and/or type IV

ABSTRACTA large intradermal tumor, 5times4 cm in size, developed on the back of 67‐year‐old Japanese woman.Histological examination revealed a large cyst next to a mass of irregular proliferation of the cystic wall, most of which showed typical trichilemmal keratinization. ABSTRACTTwo cases of so‐called multicentric pigmented Bowen's disease were examined by electron microscopy. The three types of genital lesions found in Case 1, including typical black papules, whitish macerated papules and brownish‐black papillomatous lesions, showed both dyskeratotic features which were less pronounced than those of ordinary Bowen's disease, and virus‐like particles in the nuclei of the keratinocytes beneath the horny layer. On the other hand, the two types of lesions in Case 2 showed similar features, although dyskeratotic features were not apparently observed. These results suggest that the three types of genital lesions in Case 1 are similar to each other, and also to extragenital lesions, which were also present, and that there may be a common pathogenetic factor, probably human papilloma

ABSTRACTOne hundred sixty‐two patients with cosmetic dermatitis, 64 pigmented and 98 non‐pigmented, have been studied using patch and photopatch tests with 11 coal tar dyes used in cosmetics. Incidence of allergic reactions to the dyes was the following: brilliant lake red R 8.6%, toluidine red 1.9%, lithol red calcium salt 1.9%, permanent orange 1.9%, carbanthrene blue 1.4%, erythrosine aluminum lake 0.7% and the remaining 5 dyes 0.0%. The incidence of allergic reactions to brilliant lake red R was significantly higher than that to the other 10 dyes (α=0.01). Thirteen of the 64 patients with pigmented dermatitis (20.3%) displayed allergic reactions to this dye, in contrast to only one out of 98 patients with nonpigmented dermatitis (1.0%), which is a significant difference at the 0.5% level. Doubtful photoallergic reactions to brilliant lake red R were seen in four patients, but no certain photoallergy to the dye was found. Thus, photoallergic cosmetic dermatitis from brilliant lake red R is presumed to be quite rare.
