This article outlines a team approach that has been created by the author to work therapeutically with families under statutory investigation for intrafamilial child abuse. It was devised for use by protective workers responsible for intervention with adolescents at risk and their families. This approach has been used successfully to combine the dual roles of child protection and family support in the context of statutory intervention.

The recent limited input of a systems approach in the treatment of OCD is examined in the context of the broader treating system. General information about OCD is given along with summaries of the current dominant treatment approaches (cognitive‐behavioural and drug treatment). Early attempts at applying a ‘family approach’ are identified but considered parent or spouse blaming. The author reviews observations and other evidence suggesting that family therapy may have come to a crisis of identity. He suggests that the renewal of calls to form a national regulatory body for family therapists may represent an attempt to substitute structure and institutionalised power for ideational fervour. Five key organising principles are identified that distinguish family therapy from other therapeutic stances. Finally, the author asks whether family therapy in Australia has failed to resolve its own issues with connectedness and with anger, leading in part to its present crisis.
