Addressing the theme of the 1986 National Family Therapy Conference,Developmental and Systemic Perspectives: Living with the Interface, this paper examines those two perspectives, their strengths and their weaknesses, and argues for a synthesis of what is best in each.

This article examines some of the ambiguities surrounding requests for assistance in the voluntary sector. The authors have developed a team approach at the ‘intake’ stage for clients whose requests often demand a well‐thought‐out response in order, as Haley suggests we must, “to start well”. Some of the literature about ‘beginning with families’ is examined, and the complex issues of ‘engaging’ and ‘joining’ are discussed. It is suggested that not every ‘shopper’ is necessarily a ‘customer’ for our wares, but that they are almost certainly shopping for something.‘Emergency’ and ‘crisis’ calls are distinguished, and different responses to each are indicated. This paper describes a short‐term residential family therapy project which has been developed at the Eastling Parentcraft Centre, Christchurch, New Zealand. The Eastling Parentcraft Centre provides a community based residential programme for families who have difficulties in family relationships and child management, and with parental self‐esteem. The problems may concern bonding, separation, neglect and risk of abuse, lack of social support, and feelings of isolation. Family systems theorists have developed certain concepts which they claim predict marriage outcome and the possible success of divorce mediation, should the marriage fail.In this paper I examine concepts of individual and family functioning. The concept of ‘emotional flexibility’ is presented as a criterion predisposing marriage partners to a more or less fused marriage. This in turn, is seen as predisposing the partners, in the event of separation, either to search for their own parental agreement with regard to their children's wellbeing, or to insist on a Judicial decision. In order to test the applicability of this concept, I explore the results of 64 conciliation conferences conducted by me in the Sydney Registry of the Family Court.I also consider a typology of divorcing couples worked out by divorce therapists, which uses type of spousal interaction as a criterion for predicting suitability for divorce mediation. I analyse the results of 30 Family Reports prepared by me, to test the usefulness of the typology for deciding on the most appropriate method of family dispute resolution for a given couple.I conclude by suggesting systematic exploration of core family system concepts and variables having a modulating effect, that can be used as predictors of client suitability for negotiation as well as to anticipate the type of custody/access arrangements that can be achie

Karl Tomm is Director of the Family Therapy Training Programme at the University of Calgary, Canada. He is known for his work on Circular Pattern Diagramming and articles detailing the Milan Systemic Approach to family therapy. In March he visited Australia where he conducted workshops in Adelaide and Sydney. The following interview was recorded at the end of the first day of the Adelaide Workshop.
