摘要:
This paper, the third in a series concerned with family therapy in cases involving children at risk of abuse, describes an approach to maximising parents' interest and commitment to therapy. After overviewing the difficulties faced by therapists in working with parents who are notorious for their ‘resistance’, we provide guidelines for minimising the negative consequences of notification and for constructing therapeutic leverage in order to elicit and maintain parents' motivation throughout the course of ther

摘要:
Although often taken as just a literary device or an aid in communicating ideas, metaphor can be seen to play a central and inescapable role in how we constitute reality. While metaphor pervades our meanings and interactions, we often lose sight of the metaphoric nature of our constructs. This paper focuses particularly on some of the practical therapeutic options which are opened by a greater awareness of metaphor. These options include not only using metaphors in therapy with our clients, but also providing therapy for our clients' metaphors.

摘要:
The Family Interaction Test is a narrative projective method designed to elicit children's perceptions of family life and patterns of interaction by way of stories around particular themes and events. Drawing on a post‐modern interpretive approach, the paper proposes that traditional psychometric research methodologies underpinned by the logico‐empirical paradigm are inappropriate in the study of narrative meaning. It is argued that practitioners, rather than seeing themselves as separate from the story teller and thus objectifying the ‘true’ meaning of the narratives, can instead enter into a discourse with the story teller as a way of testing hypotheses and thus establish the verisimilitude of story meanings. The results of a preliminary clinical study using this methodology with the Family Interaction Test are presented and di

摘要:
This article discusses whether the concepts ‘relationship’, ‘expressing oneself’ and ‘pre‐understanding’ might be better starting points to describe and understand ‘the therapeutic process’ than the traditional concepts ‘theory’ and ‘method’. The discussion has emerged from participation in, and will itself clarify, theso‐ca

摘要:
Family therapists have been naive about families, the pressures on them and the contexts of therapy. Therapists should be clear about their roles, sensitive to families' experience of therapy, and resist the temptation to mystify therapy.John Carpenter is Senior Lecturer in Mental Health, University of Kent, Canterbury, England and Co‐Editor ofJournal of Family Therapy. He was a guest keynote speaker at the 1991 Australian Family Therapy Conference in Brisbane, and this interview took place shortly afterwards in Melbourn

摘要:
The role of family therapy in anxiety disorders is controversial. Empirical data exist only in relation to agoraphobia and obsessive compulsive disorders. Experienced clinicians, generally working with complex cases, regard marital and family conflict as central to many cases, which require a family approach for optimal therapy. In contrast, research workers generally regard marital and family factors as irrelevant to treatment. This is because complex cases are usually excluded from empirical research. This leaves mainly uncomplicated cases without significant family conflicts, for which a family approach is rarely necessary. Techniques for treating anxiety disorders in a marital/family setting are outlined.
