摘要:
The paper reports on constrained hierarchical clustering applied to similarity analysis, the grouping of process plans and, consequently, the parts manufactured in accordance with them. It proposes solutions to some important problems such as: determining a metric of process plan similarity evaluation; the study of a cluster-creating technique with two process plans and a rule for singling out the standard plan; the determination of a logical threshold value for partitioning into families. Validation of the method creates a family set. The ‘strong forms’ of this set constitute definitive partition into families of the process plan set.

The interaction between nine dispatching and four next station selection rules in a relatively large dedicated FMS is investigated. The FMS contains 16 workstations with local buffers, nine load/unload stations, and produces six different part types. A simulation model is used, and analysed as a steady-state model. Flowtime is taken as the main criterion. It is found that WINQ (select the station whose input buffer contains the smallest amount of work) dominates, performing significantly better than the other next station selection rules considered across all dispatching rules, with few significant differences between dispatching rules when combined with WINQ. SIO/TOT (select the job with the smallest ratio obtained by dividing the processing time of the imminent operation by the total processing time for the part) performs marginally better than the other dispatching rules, particularly SIO (select the job with the shortest imminent processing time). Reasons for when a next station selection rule is more important than a dispatching rule, and vice versa, are discussed.

摘要:
This paper presents a formulation for the plant layout problem, incorporating more than two input factors that may be either qualitative or quantitative in nature. A heuristic is presented which combines a construction and improvement procedure to quickly develop a good layout from the formulation. The output layout from the heuristic may be used directly as the final layout or it may be used as a good starting layout for any other computerized layout improvement procedure. The heuristic is illustrated with a practical example of a large plant with 36 departments.

This paper analyses several multi-item joint replenishment inventory models. The comparative analysis is performed through an extensive simulation study in which the models are applied to identical environments with reasonable numbers of items. Comparison to single item models and other extensions of existing models is included. Questions of compatibility and treatment of different objectives are handled. The results indicate apparent shortcomings of the well-known (s,c,S) model as well as some limitations of other models.

In this paper an optimization approach to the design of products in a concurrent engineering environment is explored. A five-step algorithm containing attribute-based utility values is utilized which allows for the incorporation of concurrent engineering design attributes in the objective function. Two integer programming models are presented. Model 1 considers module/part interactions; however, it does not consider the interactions among various part options making up a product. Model 2 considers both interactions and also results in groups of part options that can be designed and manufactured together. In each step of the optimization process, the design of a pad assembly of a braking system is considered and explained.

Short-term production scheduling is a widely seen problem in multi-product batch operations. In this paper, an effective heuristic algorithm for scheduling a set of different tasks to be processed on serial processors is presented that provides an approach towards minimizing the entire makespan and improving productivity. Flow shops with an interstage storage policy, non-zero transfer times, and non-zero setup times are considered. The performance of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through numerous simulated problems. Statistical analysis of the output data indicates that in the situation containing up to seven tasks, the algorithm provides optimal or near optimal solutions and needs very short computation time. For a larger number of tasks, it gives up to 20% better solutions than a well-known existing algorithm.

This paper presents results from research aimed at developing a real-time, ‘look ahead’ reliability measure of risk relative to tool wear or breakage. The objective is to present results of a successful research effort which has developed a real-time based conditional reliability (of individual tool survival) output from two inputs; (1) real-time thrust data from an individual tool, and (2) an expected thrust performance population model. The resulting conditional tool reliability measure developed is compatible with real-time tool management. It is used to estimate the conditional probability of toot survival in a drilling operation.

摘要:
The focus of this analysis is on the critical issues of quality performance and management in manufacturing facilities operating under the co-operative US/Mexico export processing system. Results of the study reveal that a multi-faceted, proactive approach is extensively used in achieving world-class quality levels, and that quality management methods and techniques can be successfully transferred and implemented between First and Third World socioeconomic environments. Adjustments to the quality management methods are necessary to account for differences in ownership and in mode of operations.

Many problems within manufacturing appear as a consequence of both organizational and technological issues. The hierarchical, MRP based ‘command and execute’ relations between functions are developed to suit the organizational structures of the past and it must be replaced by distributed self-driving organizational nodes which can respond to the dynamic requirements of the future manufacture. Computers are not required to build a huge centralized system; they are required to support the tasks of the individual users in order to improve the quality of the work performed and to increase the speed at which it is performed. Integration of the process and the production planning functions to incorporate dynamic and concurrent aspects during decision making is a key element in achieving flexibility. This will result in changed operations of the functions, because the tasks and timeframes are changed. Concurrent operation of the process planning and production planning will provide co-ordination of the two activities towards the common system goal. Dynamic planning is a production control philosophy covering the activities of process and production planning in a dynamic changing environment.

It is vital, in this competitive global market, that a product be well designed with ease of assembly as well as low product cost and yet meet its functionality objectives. It is therefore essential that a tool be developed to estimate the manufacturing cost of the product during its conceptual design phase. In this paper, the development of cost models for electrical interconnect design is discussed. The cost models can be used by designers in estimating the manufacturing cost of their designs and selecting the design that is economical to produce and functionally, meets the required specifications.
