摘要:
A case problem involving the strategic repositioning of a chemical finishing operation from long cycle, make-to-stock production of high volume commodity products, to short cycle, make-to-order production of low volume speciality products is described. The focus of the analysis is on makespan feasible scheduling of parallel mixers over a short ordering cycle to minimize the resultant waste solvent stream. A model of the physical manufacturing process with respect to the scheduling criteria is described. This model is used in conjunction with a multi-start descent scheduling algorithm based on dispatching rules for clustering and sequencing followed by local improvement based on random numbers. A series of computational studies using the algorithm in conjunction with data from the case problem are described. Implementation issues associated with the case problem are emphasized.

摘要:
A new methodology for interfacing Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and Computer-Aided Process Planning (CAPP) based on automatic feature recognition is proposed in the domain of complex rotationally symmetric parts. The interface system consists of three stages: (1) Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (1GES) data translation, (2) polygonal decomposition or splitting, (3) automatic recognition of precedences and features. In the data translation stage, 1GES data are transformed to multi-sectional chains of the upperhalf profile of a part and a raw stock. For the raw stock, not only a box shape but the non-rectangular one is also considered. In the polygonal decomposition stage, the removal volume is decomposed into a data structure of a Pseudo-polygon (Pgon). The Pgon data structure based on the surface classification (real, virtual, partial, and embedded) is suggested as a new feature representation scheme. In the automatic recognition stage, the geometric precedence relationship betweenPgons, is automatically recognized, and then structured globally into a precedence tree form. The feature class and instances are automatically identified from the decomposedPgons.

摘要:
In this paper, the impact of modular product designs on the performance of manufacturing systems is studied. The performance of product designs is measured by the makespan of the corresponding aggregate schedule of the manufacturing system. Design rules for the improvement of performance of a manufacturing system are developed. Based on the design rules developed, the selection problem of modular designs is formulated as an integer programming problem. The problem can be solved by an existing heuristic algorithm. Examples are provided to illustrate the issues discussed in this paper.

摘要:
This paper develops and tests a mixed-integer programming model for finding the optimal timing and sizing of plant capacities, The object of the model is to minimize the total discounted costs over a planning horizon. The factors that are considered for this purpose are the current and future values of the following: discount rates, construction and setup costs, operating costs, subcontracting costs, idle costs of excess capacities, and growth rates of demand. Actual data from a set of electrical power generating facilities are utilized to test the model. Several variations in time paths of demand, and the cost factors are considered to assess the effects of each factor on the timing and sizing decisions

摘要:
Condition monitoring (CM) has been widely applied in most of the modern process as well as manufacturing industries as a predictive maintenance tool for incipient fault detection and trouble shooting but the interval at which the measurements are to be taken to achieve the best results has not yet been rationally discussed. This paper suggests a method for designing condition monitoring measurement intervals for all types of machines, from commissioning to replacement, by considering various factors such as risk, interval availability, debugging, useful life and wear-out regions of the failure rate curve, as well as economic factors governing the replacement prospects of the machine
