摘要:
This paper explores the effectiveness of composite time/cost priority-scheduling rules on both time and cost performance measures. These dispatching rules, based on value added or profitability, are compared, at various shop-utilization levels, against standard and modified time-based rules such as critical ratio and shortest processing time. The simulation of a randomly routed job shop shows that work in process can be significantly reduced with varying sacrifices in time-performance measures. At moderate levels of utilization, the results suggest that these dollar-based rules perform quite well. Both tabular and graphic, results are shown to clarify the tradeoffs which result.

摘要:
Despite the increased attention recently to material requirements planning (MRP) in the research literature. MRP has frequently proved to be unsuccessful on actual implementation. One factor related to its unsuccessful implementation is that MRP systems are often not sufficiently analysed and tested within an actual shop scenario prior to implementation. In this paper, a network simulation model that integrates the MRP-based shop control level with the shop level in a manufacturing system is described, and its usage demonstrated within the context of a realistic shop scenario that encompasses multiple-level product structures, several-component items, job and assembly operations, machine setups and backordering.

摘要:
This paper analyses the cost-quality implications of process improvement versus inspection enhancement for n-stage serial production processes. The analysis determines, For a given environment, the combination of process and inspection performance that minimizes the cost of each defect-Free unit produced. Insight into the process-improvement inspection-enhancement trade-off, is obtained by identifying a base-line environment and then varying key environmental parameters including: measures of production and inspection quality, functional relationships between these qualities and their costs, and penalty costs incurred by delivery of defective units to the customer. The results of the analysis are presented in the context of decisions or strategies for the immediate, short-run and long-run optimal combinations of process improvement and inspection enhancement.

摘要:
Existing graph-theoretic heuristics for block plan design attempt to maximize the sum of the REL chart seores of adjacent pairs of facilities. A new graph-theoretic heuristic is presented which has the aim of minimizing total transport ation cost instead. This has the advantage of giving credit in the objective function to pairs of facilities which are somewhat near but not actually adjacent. Reported computational experience with the method is encouraging.

Buffer storage of the work-in-process inventory, decouples successive stages of automatic transfer production lines, assuring partial operability under machine failure. Certain special features such as secondary (standby) machines, special maintenance and diagnostic systems can lengtben the uptime or shorten the downtime of individual stages. When special features forKstages and spaces forMbuffers are available, it is of great interest to system designers to know which stages should have the special features and where the buffer spaces should be inserted to maximize the line output rate. This paper addresses itself to such design problems. A bivariate dynamic programming procedure is developed which provides a layout for the buffers and an allocation of special features, maximizing the line output rate as defined by Buzacott (1967, 1968). The Buzacott formula is based on a heuristic argument which provides, in general, an upper bound on the true system output rate.
