摘要:
In this article we present a real-life study of a job shop manufacturing ball screws. The aim of the study is to suggest an efficient scheduling and due-date setting policy for the shop. Three different methodologies for setting parameter coefficients for due-date setting in a job shop are proposed. These methodologies are based on a search algorithm, simulated annealing algorithm, and a combination of simulated annealing algorithm and regression analysis. It is found that the combination of a simulated annealing algorithm with regression analysis provides better due-date estimates in minimizing the root mean square of lateness.

摘要:
Optimal subdivision of total depth of cut during cost optimization in multipass turning is an important decision along with the selection of speed and feed. In this paper a new approach for the determination of the optimal subdivision of depth of cut is presented. The total production cost minimization is achieved by summation of the minimum costs of individual rough passes and the finish pass. The cost of each rough pass or finish pass is independently minimized. The optimal subdivision of total depth of cut is obtained using an integer programming model. The resulting subdivision of depth of cut yields a lower minimum cost than that obtained by using the commonly practised strategy of having minimum depth of cut in the finish pass and removing the remaining depth of cut in number of rough passes of equal size.

The production switching heuristic (PSH) is recognized as an effective solution method for the aggregate production planning problem in industries where production is limited to discrete levels. However, we find that the PSH is not sufficiently responsive to demand fluctuation and tends to make belated decisions. This shortcoming stems mainly from the switching mechanism. This paper proposes an improved version of the PSH. The heuristic uses an improved switching mechanism which can be shown to dominate the PSH. The effectiveness of the proposed heuristic is investigated with several well known problems including the paint factory problem. The results are compared with those of the linear decision rule and the linear programming model as well as the PSH.

Material requirements planning (MRP) systems are designed to deal with production scheduling for products with lumpy demand patterns, as opposed to the continuous demand assumed in the classical inventory models. Past MRP lot-sizing studies concluded that the MRP system performance improves as the demand becomes lumpier. The purpose of this paper is to examine the impact of various degrees of demand lumpiness on the system performance of MRP systems by a simulation study. Results show that the performance improves to u certain extent as the demand becomes lumpier. However, the system performance starts to deteriorate when the demand pattern becomes extremely lumpy. MRP users should exercise caution in the introduction of demand lumpiness in the master production schedule (MPS) to induce a better MRP system performance. If a certain degree of demand lumpiness exists in the MPS as given in an operating environment, then the choice of an appropriate lot-sizing rule, such as the Silver-Meal algorithm, could lake advantage of the impact of demand lumpiness.

This research develops a simulated annealing (SA) based heuristic for cell formation problems. We apply the SA based heuristic to many popular examples for cell formation problems. The computational results show that the SA based heuristic performs very well in all these examples, and the SA based heuristic has several advantages that most of the existing algorithms do not have.

摘要:
This paper introduces a simulation generator for dual-card, kanban-controlled flow shops. Modelling kanban-controlled, pull manufacturing systems is a challenging task. The simulation generator eliminates modelling and the coding stages of simulation analysis and generates codes in SIMAN simulation language. An easy to use data-driven environment allows users to develop, edit, save and execute models without requiring any programming skills. The simulation generator is capable of simulating multi-product, multi-stage flow shops with multiple kanban cards (withdrawal and production order kanbans) and variable container sizes.

Many industrial inspection tasks can be performed satisfactorily by conventional image processing systems which utilise feature extraction and related feature measuring algorithms. However, for the inspection of parameters such as texture or colour, it also may be necessary to adopt an AI technique which involves the use of artificial neural networks. This paper outlines one such system (WISE) which incorporates algorithms for both conventional image processing used for position and rotation normalisation, and n-tuple processing for subsequent pattern classification. Since its initial implementation, WISE has undergone considerable development and is now capable of inspecting various types of pattern space such as 2-D shape space and 3-D colour space. Results obtained from the use of these pattern spaces are documented as are results for ‘travelling window inspection’, ‘zoned H-S-I inspection’, ‘retinal simulation’, ‘% inspection coverage’, ‘inspection sensitivity’ and ‘archetypal inspection artefacts’. In conclusion, the present highly evolved WISE system provides excellent recognition performance for artefacts which are both complex and coloured. Although, at present, WISE is implemented in software (C+ +) and, therefore, slow in operation, it is considered that, by using special-purpose hardware and/or parallel processing techniques, operational speed approaching TV frame rate will be feasible in the future.
