摘要:
Facility layout is an important aspect of designing any manufacturing setup. However, the problem of finding optimal layouts is hard and deterministic techniques are not computationally feasible. In this work a genetic algorithm is presented for obtaining efficient layouts. The different aspects involved in the design of efficient genetic algorithms are discussed in detail. It is shown that the population maintained by the genetic algorithm for facility layout should consist of feasible solutions only. A new efficient crossover operator is developed. Experimental results obtained with the proposed algorithm on test problems taken from the literature are promising.

摘要:
A laser system which incorporates a charge-coupled-device (CCD) sensor is developed to measure, in real lime, the maximum peak-to-valley surface roughness,Rmax. produced during finish turning. A three-layer neural network is used in conjunction with a back-propagation learning algorithm to predictRmax, by quickly recognizing the angular scattered light patterns (ASLP) reflected from the workpiece in the feed direction. The predictedRmaxvalues have a maximum error of about 10% when compared to conventional stylus measurements.

摘要:
The design and justification of an integrated manufacturing system and all of the supporting sub-systems (e.g. material handling system) is a difficult task. One of the most difficult aspects in the design process is determining how and where to proceed. This paper proposes the use of a marginal analysis-directed branch and bound approach as the basis for directing the design process so that a combined economic and performance justification path results. The background and rationale for a marginal analysis guided design approach is given and an example of a material handling system design is presented to illustrate the development of a design justification decision path.

摘要:
A novel and simple method is presented to find and identify unique objects in a grey level scene. A database is generated, containing the objects which are expected lo occur in the scene. These objects are stored as lists of consecutive points on an ideal object boundary. An algorithm is developed which maps the stored points onto the input scene, and after each mapping the closeness of the match between the object and the scene is noted. A parameter search is then used to change the mapping until the best match is obtained. The results presented show that the algorithm is very accurate for scenes containing single objects, and for scenes containing multiple objects which do not overlap. For multiple overlapping objects a degradation in performance occurs; however this degradation may be reduced by a more robust cost function. Due to its reliability under certain operating conditions, it is considered that a vision system based on this algorithm would have many applications in highly automated industries where image fields are normally highly constrained or defined.

摘要:
This paper describes an expert module for automatic process selection and sequencing. This process selection and sequencing algorithm comprises three sub-algorithms, the transformation algorithm, the refinement algorithm and the linearization algorithm. The module is a part of a prototype expert process planning system for the machining of prismatic parts. In this prototype CAPP system, both the part description and the operation sequence are represented by a tree structure. To generate the process sequence for a given part, an operation tree is converted from the geometric description in the transformation algorithm and this tree will then be refined and then linearized to the final process sequence. The system is equipped with a sequence knowledge-base which records various types of information including the process capabilities, filling knowledge, surface priority, surface knowledge, refinement knowledge, and linearizing strategy.
