摘要:
A new shuffling heuristic-based approach that combines the random storage and class-based storage assignments is proposed for the storage location assignment in an automated storage retrieval system. In this paper we describe the shuffling algorithms developed and show that the waiting time and service time reduced considerably for this storage policy. The efficiency and validity of the algorithm are illustrated through computer simulation.

In supplying just-in-time customers, one common industry practice is for the vendor to set up a warehouse near the point of demand. We assume that the plant is a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) where the changeover times between parts of the same family axe. negligible, but not between parts of different families. Thus the FMS must be configured to produce one family of parts at a time. For each part type, we assume that the vendor makes deliveries to the warehouse at fixed intervals. We examined two related issues: the run length for each part family and the number of deliveries to the warehouse in each cycle. We first showed that it is not necessary for the vendor to produce for each delivery, nor is it desirable to complete the entire production lot before delivery. We then investigated the FMS loading problem for two or more part-families. We developed the expressions for the optimal run length and delivery frequency, (1) when loading the part types sequentially and (2) when loading the part types simultaneously. The resulting models can be shown to be consistent with the classical EOQ model.

A new CNC tool path planning method is developed for accurate and efficient finishing cutting of sculptured surfaces. The proposed method generates CNC tool paths based on an offset surface of an object instead of the actual surface. The new algorithm consists of two main computational techniques: offset surface generation technique and offset CNC tool path planning technique. In offset surface generation, approximate parametric offset surfaces are generated accurately from an original parametric surface by employing bi-cubic surface patch, surface conversion, and surface subdivision algorithms. In offset CNC tool path planning, the precise geometric models of chordal deviation and cusp height on an offset surface are established. The effectiveness of this proposed CNC tool path planning method is verified by geometric simulation and verification which detect and identify errors in CNC tool paths.

Inventory cycle counting is considered a basic component of effective inventory management. With the Just-in-Time production management system, inventory is greatly reduced. Is there a role for cycle counting under JIT? Logical structures for any manufacturing process can be determined by combining the product routeing with the bill of material. The identification of the logical structures is known as V-A-T analysis. By using the V-A-T analysis method, cycle counting can be focused to support the operations that are most critical to success under JIT. Three manufacturing plants are used to illustrate the process.

摘要:
The Perrego algorithm, which forms machining cells based upon the weighted importance of the parts which they produce, is presented. Classification and coding (C&C) and production flow analysis (PFA) were synthesized into one single algorithm using similarity coefficients and a cluster identification algorithm to combine the two methods. The resulting unique algorithm's advantage is the utilization of morphological information, such as manufacturing production quantity requirements, with the technological attributes of the parts: cells were formed with minimal amounts of parts travelling between cells. The algorithm also considers the economics of machine duplication for forming independent cells.

This paper introduces a new method for generating cutter paths for milling machines. The generation of cutter paths is an important area for research, since it is critical to the validity of the path and efficiency of its production. In this paper, we show a mechanism by which paths may be de-constructed from initial paths, thus guaranteeing the validity of the path and lending itself to efficient generation.

Several studies have shown that more than 70% of all medium to large size companies (sales exceeding $19 million) have some form of quality improvement program in place. Based on independent studies by Arthur D. Little, Ernst & Young, and others, researchers have concluded that only about one-fifth of all QI programs achieve tangible results. One explanation for the disappointing results is that many quality improvement efforts are not results-oriented. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the value of using the theory of constraints for achieving a results-oriented quality improvement program.

In this paper, a hierarchical methodology for the design of manufacturing cells is proposed, synthesizing the capabilities of new pattern recognition methods for rapid clustering of large part-machine data sets, with multi-objective optimization capabilities of mathematical programming. The procedure includes three phases. In Phase I, part families and associated machine types are identified through neural network methods for pattern recognition. Phase II is a cell formation phase that involves the assignment of part families and individual machines to create independent cells. It takes into account several factors such as capacity constraints, cell size restrictions, minimization of load imbalances and provision of flexibility, Phase III attempts to minimize inter-cell traffic further for families that may still have to be processed in more than one cell. The methodology is illustrated using several examples.
