摘要:
A comprehensive method for the design of hybrid-type production shops, which comprise both manufacturing cells and individual workcentres, is presented. The method targets the minimization of the material handling effort within the shop and includes four basic steps: (1) identification of candidate manufacturing cells, (2) evaluation and selection of the cells to be implemented, (3) determination of the intra-cell layout, and (4) determination of the shop layout. For the cell formation step the 1CTMM technique has been enhanced to cater for important practical issues. The layout of each significant cell is determined by a simulated annealing (SA)-based algorithm. Once the sizes and shapes of the selected cells are known the shop layout is determined by a similar algorithm. The resulting hybrid shop consists of the selected cells and the remaining machines. The methodology has been implemented in an integrated software system and has been applied to redesign the shop of a large manufacturer of radar antennas.

摘要:
This paper introduces the FACT (Fuzzy art with Add Clustering Technique) algorithm which is a new neural network-based clustering technique. FACT can be trained to cluster machines and parts for cellular manufacturing under a multiple objective environment. The existing GT clustering techniques are mainly concerned with grouping parts and machines based on only one criterion which is the parts' processing routes. The FACT algorithm is able to consider several similarity criteria such as parts' processing routes, design requirements of parts, processing time on each machine, and demand for each part. The FACT algorithm, which is based on the fuzzy ART neural network, is powerful enough to solve problems of real-world sized complexity.

摘要:
This article presents a model for analysing advanced manufacturing technology (AMT) investment decisions. An analysis of the decision processes of 22 manufacturing firms, who have adopted AMT, revealed consistent decision making patterns. These patterns, viewed in light of the decision making literature, led to the development of an AMT investment decision model. The derived model consists of stimulus, solution identification, detailing evaluation and authorization stages. The research revealed that the intermediary stages of the model were not performed by all firms, but were dependent upon the scope of the AMT investment, the size and managerial style of the firm, and the degree of experience in AMT investments. The model attempts to illustrate the entire investment decision process, and can be used as a tool for managers and researchers in assessing the thoroughness of AMT investment decisions.

摘要:
When a company adopts cellular manufacturing and creates a cell, one operational problem that must be addressed is how to schedule parts within the cell. Many studies have investigated scheduling rules in a cellular manufacturing environment. However, there has been little consensus on the best scheduling rule to use. To address this lack of consensus, this study evaluated the best scheduling rules from most of these studies in a flow-line cell. The impact of two environmental factors, setup to runtime ratio and number of part families, was also investigated. Out of the five best scheduling rules found, three of these had not been investigated in previous group scheduling studies. The scheduling rule that most often performed best was selecting the part family with the most waiting jobs and sequencing these jobs in shortest processing time order, a relatively simple rule. The more complex rules generally showed poorer performance.

摘要:
In 5-axis machining, simultaneous change of tool orientation during machining affects the effective cutter shape, thus making the cutter selection difficult. In this paper, a maximum effective cutting radius approach is proposed to solve the cutter selection problem for multi-axis machining. The effective cutting radius of a tool is represented by a function of its physical tool size and the tool orientation angles, the incline angle λand the tilt angle ω. Optimal cutter selection is determined by geometric evaluation through the maximum effective cutting radius approach. A boundary-based approach for roughing cutter selection is also briefly discussed. The proposed methodology can be used to select cutters for the 3-, 4-, and 5-axis sculptured surface machining.

摘要:
In this paper, we analyse the operational planning problem in an electronic assembly system with multiple placement machines operating in parallel. The partial setup strategy is proposed as an effective methodology for this problem. This strategy attempts to determine the balance between processing time and changeover time during system operation. The Tour primary issues are determining the assignment of products to machines, the sequence of products on each machine, the assignment of components to feeder locations for each product, and the component placement sequence for each product. Four solution procedures for unique and partial setup strategies are developed and tested. The computation results show that for low to medium volume high mix environments, the partial setup procedures offer significant improvement over the unique setup strategies. The results also show that no single fixed strategy dominates in all scenarios, and therefore, an adaptable procedure that will choose the best solution for each set of requirements is needed.

摘要:
This paper presents a new class of nonlinear control charts which respond quickly to small shifts and jump patterns in tme series. The underlying disturbance models for the control charts are nonlinear extensions of the IMA(1,1) model. The Kalman filtering algorithm generates Bayesian estimates of the process level for the control chart plotting. The single-parameter chart is identical to the EWMA, while the two- and three-parameter designs are much more effective in detecting small shifts mixed with local trends. The nonlinear control charting scheme is also capable of detecting a mean shift in independent observation.

摘要:
This paper argues that it is essential to consider explicitly the main elements of manufacturing costs in designing cellular manufacturing systems. Consequently, a mixed linear program is introduced to help solve the cell formation problem where the objective is to minimise the sum of these cost elements. A method to determine its optimal solution is proposed as well as an adaptation of the simulated annealing algorithm designed to achieve good approximate solutions. Finally, a quick assessment of the performance of this simulated annealing adaptation is provided.

摘要:
We present a novel approach to specification of dynamic systems. This approach, a stochastic extension of process algebra, facilitates quantitative, or performance, analysis, in addition to qualitative analysis. For unreliable systems this integrated approach encourages the investigation of the impact of functional characteristics on the performance of the system. Throughout the paper details of the stochastic process algebra are made concrete via an example: a robot control problem. Two specifications are presented of this problem. The first, an idealization, does not represent the possibility of failures. The second models both failures and recoveries. Each is solved to obtain performance measures for the system.

摘要:
Scheduling in a remanufacturing environment is more complex and the scheduler must deal with more uncertainty than in a traditional manufacturing environment. In order to properly schedule in a remanufacturing environment the schedule must be able to cope with several complicating factors which increase variability. The schedule must be able to cope with conditional routeings, a routeing that may or may not be taken due to the condition of the unit. The schedule must also be able to cope with dependent events, e.g. operation B cannot begin until operation A is completed. Drum-buffer-rope (DBR.) offers an extremely robust method of scheduling. A schedule built using DBR can take both conditional routeings and dependent events into account. A realistic example from a military depot is discussed in detail and each step required to build a schedule using DBR is explained fully. This paper also shows the results from a simulation model of DBR at a repair/rework depot which are benchmarked against the present production planning and control system.
