摘要:
With the increasing trend in the use of automated guided vehicles systems (AGVS) in manufacturing, the need for design tools becomes greater. The problem is that optimized static design models do not ensure expected performance due to the difficulty in capturing the dynamic operational characteristics of the vehicle system. This study shows that by using the single-loop guide path configuration some of the dynamic features of the system, like the impact the empty vehicle flow has on the system's performance, is reduced. Thus, a more reliable prediction of system performance is achieved

摘要:
The Cpkindex is a common process performance standard which quantifies process location and variation. However, the index is also frequently used to estimate the proportion of non-conforming items without regard to the underlying restrictions or assumptions that apply. An example based on an actual industrial case study will serve to underscore the consequences of the indiscriminate use of the index for this purpose. Subsequently, additional experimentation and analyses will be conducted to explore the generality of the results obtained from the case study

摘要:
This paper presents models for multi-item, multi-stage machining systems. The first model presented extends the manufacturing lead time expression developed for single-item, single-stage machining systems to multi-item, multi-stage machining systems through the introduction of the appropriate auxiliary variables. Application of Little's law to the manufacturing lead time expression results in the development of a lot sizing model. Then, the lot-size value minimizing inventory costs is derived analytically. Finally a model is presented for the simultaneous determination of the optimal cutting speed and lot-size values. It is shown that the total cost function is dominated by its machining cost component. Based on this property, an efficient search technique is developed for quickly locating the optimal cutting-speed-lot-size point in machining systems constrained by the time allocated to processing an item on a machine. Computational experience with the algorithm verifies its quick convergence (after only a few iterations) to the optimal point

摘要:
This paper deals with a man-on-board automated storage/retrieval system where each customer order consists of a number of different items and is picked one at a time. For the system the problem examined is to allocate storage locations dedicatedly to items so that the total travel time required to pick all the given orders per period is minimized. The problem is shown to be formulated as a variant of the generalized assignment model. A heuristic for the storage layout problem is developed based on the group technology concept considering both order structure and frequency. Through the heuristic, close relationships between items are identified from the order structure, and then based on the relationships the items are compelled to be stored closely in the storage rack following a space-filling curve. Experimental results are provided to describe the performance of the heuristic

摘要:
Historically, product design has been a joint venture between the marketing and manufacturing functions of a company. Marketing attempts to identify key attributes which are desired by customers and bundles them into product designs. Manufacturing translates these new product concepts into manufacturing operations to be realized as economically as possible. However, goals of maximizing market revenues and minimizing production cost may often be in conflict. In this paper we develop an approach to minimize the above conflicts by identifying product groups which possess manufacturing commonalities

摘要:
A new method is presented for representing machined surfaces, machining operations, machine tools and cutting tools according to the definitions of design and manufacturing primitives. A conjugative coding system is achieved through a new concept termed as conjugative concept. The codes provided by this system are not the classification codes. They are computer internal definition of relations between design and manufacturing which integrate design and manufacturing information into a compact data format. There are two significances of the codes. One is that the codes can represent directly design entities from CAD geometrical models. The other is that the codes replace the logics and rules built in automatic manufacturing systems to support the decision-making. This will provide the possibility of developing a single database (SDB) for a computer automated manufacturing system, which has been proposed to solve the problem of integration between CAD, CAPP and CAM systems

摘要:
A hybrid manufacturing system (HMS) is a manufacturing system where flexible manufacturing system (FMS) and conventional manufacturing system (CMS) exist simultaneously. This study investigated the combined part selection (PS), load sharing (LS) and machine loading (ML) problem in HMS to obtain consistent solutions to the related decisions by concurrently considering the three and to improve the overall system performance by coordinately utilizing the production resources of FMS and CMS. This problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming model. A special case of the problem consisting of only LS and ML is also discussed and modelled. The applications of the models are demonstrated by example problems. Solution procedures based on Lagrangian relaxation are also suggested for larger-sized problems

摘要:
The implementation of ‘kanban’ inventory control systems, originally developed in Japan by Toyota, in flow-line manufacture has been widely described. It is generally asserted that kanbans are an efficient method of controlling flow-line assembly systems with consistent demands. This paper describes work carried out in association with Jaguar Cars Limited to develop a steady-state Markovian model for calculating the number of kanbans required to control single-stage processes feeding assembly lines. A Markovian model of an alternative just-in-time system, in which the off-line process is triggered by the passage of vehicle bodies past a point prior to the assembly area, is also described. The use of these models has shown that the use of a trigger system leads to lower inventory levels and greater pressure for improvement than a kanban system

摘要:
For an unreliable production system, process monitoring, quality control, and maintenance are essential activities for assuring the proper operation of the production system and for managing the quality of the system's outputs. Although these activities are interrelated, they are seldom studied simultaneously. This paper interrelates and synthesizes the economic design of these activities and the management of an unreliable production system described in terms of an M/G/1 queue. A mathematical model is developed to determine the optimal policies of these activities when both the quality and quantity issues in the system are considered. Then, managerial insights are provided regarding the role and interrelationship of these activities. Finally, hypothetical data are used to illustrate the impact of these activities on the operating characteristics of the production system

摘要:
An approach for developing the optimal operator scheduling solution for a group technology (GT) production problem is studied. A state-transition model is developed to analyse and gain insight into the operator-machine interaction of the problem. Operator cyclic walking patterns are then denned. A Petri net model has succeeded in determining the optimal cyclic walking pattern. The computational efforts needed for the Petri net model are compared with those for an integer programming model. The results show large savings in computational effort by using the Petri net model. In addition, the extendability of the Petri net model for various system aspects is addressed
