摘要:
A modelling of interactive facilities layout designer reasoning for the purpose of improving the quality of solution currently available in the layout literature. Some of the constraints which are laborious to explore interactively, are enumerated by automated reasoning. The facilities layout design task is conceived as a multi-agent collaborative reasoning problem. The described approach is fundamentally different from previous approaches in three ways: (i) The reasoning is focused on the automated identification and rectification attempts on a set of qualitative patterns (termed qualitative layout anomalies or QLAs). (ii) The problem is solved by context-based reasoning, with each context originating from a different starting solution. The contexts allow one to jump into interesting regions of the solution space, (iii) An automated interface of the reasoning process and linear optimization is developed to solve the layout problem. This makes it more convenient to enumerate the solution space more exhaustively than is typically possible by a comparable ad hoc human interactive layout reasoning coupled with linear optimization. The methodology is implemented in an object-oriented environment using Smallta)k-80. A few experimental results are given and these results are compared with previous results on similar cases.

摘要:
Now that just-in-time (JIT) concepts have become widely accepted and programs to reduce setup costs are becoming common, production managers need guidance in order to adapt to, as well as facilitate, the implementation of JIT goals. An inventory model is presented for the situation in which setup costs are subject to learning curve effects. The performance of this model is analysed and the conditions for its implementation are discussed.

摘要:
The inherent advantages of a flexible work-force have been brought to the forefront by innovative manufacturing techniques developed by the Japanese. The flexible work-force presents new opportunities for operating assembly lines, including the possibility of manning a line with fewer operators than stations. A method for determining a flexible work-force assignment and buffer capacity that operates at or near minimum cost is presented. The method, OFRO (organizing flexible, rotating operators), allows an assembly line to operate with fewer operators than stations.

摘要:
In this paper the place of the determination of the tool-chip contact length in a predictive analysis of orthogonal machining is presented and its relative importance to various aspects of machining is considered. The necessary accuracy of determination of the contact length is explored in relation to the predictions of a comprehensive thermal model of orthogonal cutting. Several 'theories’ for the prediction of contact length are reviewed and their predictive capabilities experimentally assessed. A number of these models include parameters which have to be established from experimental cutting tests; nevertheless most of the models provide qualitatively plausible trends in contact length prediction, although none can be considered sufficiently accurate from a quantitative point of view. It is shown that the most adequate method of contact length estimation is to curve fit multivariable regression equations to cutting data, and incorporate these in the basic cutting data base for use in predictive machining performance models.

摘要:
Scheduling problems are considered as combinatorial optimization problems. Hopfield and Tank (1985) showed that some combinatorial optimization problems can be solved using artificial neural network systems. However, their network model for solving the combinatorial optimization problems often attains a local optimum solution depending on the initial state of the network. Recently, some stochastic neural network models have been proposed for the purpose of avoiding convergence to a local optimum solution. In this paper a scheduling problem for minimizing the total actual flow time is solved by using the Gaussian machine model which is one of the stochastic neural network models.

摘要:
Flexibility of manufacturing systems and the diversity of parts that may be produced by these systems is of great importance to managers. The effects of both product diversity and the ability of machines to perform a variety of operations, defined here as flexibility, are investigated. As product diversity increases, the deterioration of system performance is measured. A unique approach is adopted. In order to eliminate the interaction between the factors in this study, optimally designed systems are compared. The methodology adopted is a combination of computer simulation, response surface methodology and the Hooke-Jeeves procedure. We conclude that more flexibility is not necessarily better than less flexibility, and that as product diversity increases, for a given system there is a level of flexibility that will optimize system performance and minimize the rate of its deterioration.

摘要:
Flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs) are allowing firms to take advantage of diversified, low volume production of products with short life-cycles. The flexibility provided by an FMS improves the ability of a system to respond to change. Several types of manufacturing flexibility (M F) have been identified in the literature. Ideally, it is desirable to provide an FMS with all types of flexibility. However, there is a general consensus on the discordant nature of some of the flexibilities. This makes it imperative for management to recognize which flexibilities it deems critical to the manufacturing strategy of the firm. This allows the management to trade-off some of the less important flexibilities for the more important ones, as the need arises.

摘要:
International location decisions represent a major determinant of the manufacturing strategies of high technology enterprises. This paper studies the global location decisions of these companies and the cost dynamics experienced in manufacturing a single product over time. A set of assumptions and variable cost functions are developed to model a high technology firm's locational choices and transfer of production from domestic to foreign manufacturing sites. An enumeration procedure is presented that determines the minimum cost locational sequence of plant and host country locations required during a specified time horizon. Application of the mathematical model to a multinational enterprise scenario outlines the solution methodology.

摘要:
Designing continuous flow manufacturing (CFM) facilities involves assigning a sequence of operations to facilities and solving a resource assignment subproblem (RAS) to minimize machine acquisition costs, and location assignment subproblem (LAS) to minimize transport costs. This paper presents a branch-and-bound based heuristic for developing CFM configurations used as part of a decision support system for CFM system design.

摘要:
The manual procedure of drafting engineering designs is fast becoming obsolete. Newer systems for computer-aided design (CAD) drafting are emerging everyday. However, the process of including tolerance details in these CAD drawings is extremely complex and has very little evidence of existence in past literature. This paper identifies and computerizes a procedure for automatic tolerance assignment in CAD drawings. The procedure developed envelopes three major stages: feature extraction, feature infcrcncing, and rule-based tolerance allocation. The system was implemented on an IBM-PC compatible. The results established through example analysis verify the utility of the system.
