摘要:
In the last five years, developed countries have seen more rapid advancement in the application of high technology to manufacturing than in the two preceding decades. Many of these applications have occurred under the banner of a new type of manufacturing called flexible manufacturing systems (FMSs). With the implementation of FMSs, a new awareness of the opportunities for manufacturing-cost reduction is emerging. In this paper, the FMS taxonomy and structure is presented. To exploit this structure, FMS process and problem views are presented, and various aspects of flexibility are discussed. To show the complexity of an FMS, its design and operational problems are defined. Basic functions of robots and vision systems are also presented. Finally, FMS modularity issues and future trends in FMS development are outlined.

Using tachistoscopic test data from previous experiments, a simple method of calculating visual lobe size was found to give results comparable to those obtained with a more complex method using linear regression of transformed data, An experiment using Hong Kong Chinese subjects is reported, in which the first trial of a card-sorting test gave highly significant correlation with lobe dimensions. With some modification, the test could provide a simple, rapid and reliable means of determining relative lobe area. Lobe area is known to be an important visual function for search performance, and the simple test proposed may prove useful as a selection and training aid for tasks involving monitoring or quality assessment.

Existing literature suggests that C.N.C. is only economic for medium-sized batches; companies who regard themselves as ‘one-off’ batch manufacturers are not, therefore, induced to invest in C.N.C. This paper describes the use of C.N.C. lathes in such a company and shows that, by using a computer program which interfaces with the materials requirement planning system, suitable components can be selected on the basis of optimizing savings rather than by the conventional batch size or load. Using this technique, which additionally provides an ongoing method for maximizing savings throughout the life of the machine, C.N.C. is revealed to be financially viable for ‘one-off’ manufacturers. This is illustrated lining data from such a company.

Using a comprehensive simulation model, a number of important parameters relating to manufacturing cells are investigated. These include: (i) the proposal by Burbidge that ‘period batch control’ is more appropriate for group technology cells, (ii) the effects of different numbers of tool set-up types or part families, (iii) the comparative merits of a larger 18-machine cell and 3 parallel 6-machine cells and (iv) the effects of inter-operation transit time within cells. System performance obtained showed that, with an efficient scheduling rule, the smaller batches product better facility utilization and job throughput. The results also suggest that, expect for extremely small, restrictive cells (with one or two tool setup types), the addition of further part families does not cause a serious deterioration in the productivity of the cell. The larger cells were found to be more effective than the small cells placed in parallel in all the system performance characteristics recorded.

摘要:
Tables of efficiency for a set of machines regularly patrolled and automatically repaired by a (robot) operator have been produced. The theoretical basis of the tables has been described elsewhere. The numerical results are used to compare two repair strategies which may be adopted by the robot. The implications of the results for the design of the machine are considered.

Part orientation for flexible manufacturing and assembly can be approached in several different ways. This paper reviews some approaches currently being developed and describes a potentially inexpensive method for the flexible feeding of headed parts. Utilizing adjustable tooling mid bi-directional belts to achieve part orientation. Some experimental observations of the feed rate for headed parts relating to feeder design are also discussed.

Two policies are compared for the joint replenishment problem with a general ordering cost function. The fixed-cycle policy is solved using a dynamic programming approach, resulting in partitioning the items into groups. The basic-cycle policy uses a heuristic approach to partition the items into only two groups. A simulation model is developed to compare the effectiveness of the two policies and the EOQ approach.

The optimal design and control of flexible manufacturing systems is essential to minimize operating costs and enhance productivity. We present a hybrid mathematical model of a flexible manufacturing system as a closed network of queues for which the optimal cost effective system configuration is determined by a. partial implicit enumeration algorithm. The optimal configuration of both reliable and unreliable flexible manufacturing systems are considered.

摘要:
This paper develops a finite-horizon denumerable state-space dynamic programming formulation of the inspector location problem in convergent production lines. The effects of the inspection point location decisions on production planning are clarified, and the resulting complexity of the determination of the costs of not detecting defective units is demonstrated under the assumption that all detected defective units are eliminated from the production line. A sample problem is solved by a backward induction algorithm to obtain the minimum-cost screening program.

This paper presents a predictive model for describing the productive capacity of special multiproduct manufacturing cells with stochastic activity times and random feedback flow. Two cases are considered, single-product type batch production and multiproduct type interleaved production. The major performance measures which are evaluated are the total batch processing time, number of product recycles and the distribution of interdeparture times for each product type. Expressions are given for the distribution functions, means and variances of these quantities, for any distribution of manufacturing time. Operational analysis of a flexible manufacturing cell is discussed with an illustration of the Oscillatory phenomenon of the probability density function of its total batch time.
