摘要:
In this paper, a neuro computing approach for integrating design and manufacturing engineering is developed. Products and components have been traditionally designed without considering constraints imposed by a manufacturing system. With the introduction of concurrent engineering, design and manufacturing engineering are viewed as an integrated area. A three layer neural network that integrates several manufacturing functions is constructed for designing a cellular manufacturing system. The neuro computing system proposed provides a designer with the desired features that meet the current manufacturing constraints for design of a new component. The proposed methodology overcomes the typical limitations of neutral networks such as the internal representation and training problem, and proves to be appropriate for concurrent engineering.

摘要:
Automated engineering analysis (AEA) of the solid model of a product is an essential task for the implementation of concurrent engineering. AEA has the potential to analyse several design and manufacturing activities in order to reduce the product development time and the associated costs. This especially has been the goal of many American manufacturing companies facing stiff global competition.

摘要:
A technique for finding economical part-machine families in cellular manufacturing environments is described. The technique is based on trying to optimize, in an economic sense, machine replication and part sub-contracting strategies. An important feature of this work is that it allows management and facility designers to place limits on the sizes of the part-machine families. The most recent developments in graph approximations are exploited. Computational results on a number of benchmark problems from the group technology literature are presented. These results indicate the promise of the proposed technique.

摘要:
Operational dimensioning and tolerancing play an important role in process planning. It ensures that resultant part dimensions and tolerances do not exceed specified design values. Tolerance chart analysis is an effective technique for process planners to calculate mean values and tolerances of operational dimensions. However, a tolerance chart can be built only after all the intial engineering decisions have been made concerning the process plan. Specifically, setups and setup datums should be identified. While many researchers focused their attention on tolerance chart analysis, the selection of setups and setup datums (setup planning) was overlooked. No systematic approaches for setup planning can be found in the literature. This paper discusses the importance of setup planning to tolerance control in process planning. A graphical approach is then proposed to generate optimal setup plans based on design tolerance specifications.

摘要:
We develop a simple decision model which can be used for determining the optimum levels of order quantity, order cycle, and capacity change for a capacity-constrained, single-stage joint lot sizing/scheduling (JLS) situation. The model solution (i.e., capacity change) can also be converted into an equivalent setup time reduction. Thus, the model can be used to evaluate the effectiveness of capacity change and setup reduction alternatives. Therefore, the proposed model extends the capability for analysis over that of current JLS approaches.

摘要:
In this paper, the real-time failure-recovery of flexible production systems is considered. Initially, the problem is structured and formulated within a systemic framework, and then, a generic local-in-time, schedule-repair approach is proposed. The coloured timed Petri net formalism is used to represent, in a modular and compact way, the production system's discrete-event dynamics. In connection with this, an intelligent opportunistic recovery technique has been developed for obtaining, in real time, the recovery trajectory which conforms best to a chosen production strategy. The application of the approach is demonstrated by considering recovery cases in a batch-processing chemicals plant.

摘要:
Recovering surface geometry from crafted masters is an essential process in the manufacture of production moulds and dies. Direct copying and reverse engineering strategies are used intensively to support the tool-making process but high labour skill and costly measuring equipment are necessary to realize the finished products. The aim of this paper is to report a new surface reproduction approach, which is based on the techniques of photometric stereo and shape from shading. The tool path planning parameters, surface normals and coordinates, are recovered from a group of halftone photographic images using a combination of the reversal of the Phong illumination model, and successive integration of the gradient parameters on linear reflectance maps. The halftone images are captured and processed using computer vision techniques. This data is used to drive a ball-nosed cutter under numerical control. The approach can produce surfaces as complex as the human figure, which are difficult to reproduce by conventional surface profile tracing and machining methods. The machining of the Venus de Milo sculptured surface, cited in the case study, proves that the new surface reproduction method is an alternative strategy which uses non-contact type surface profile assessment techniques.

摘要:
In this paper, we develop a mixed integer program for the design of cellular manufacturing systems. We assume that there are alternate process plans for each part and that each operation in these plans can be performed on alternate machines. The objective of the model is to minimize the sum of investment, processing and material handling costs. Processing times, capacities of machines and cell size restrictions are considered in the process. Part families, machine groups and part plans are identified concurrently. For the efficient solution of the relaxed linear program an efficient column generation scheme is provided. In the problem under consideration columns are generated by solving simple semi-assignment problems. Three different strategies are tested for generating the columns and the best scheme is selected for subsequent use in the branch and bound procedure developed. Finally, computational experience is provided for randomly generated test problems.

摘要:
This paper presents an optimal control approach to continuous-time aggregate production planning problems. The proposed approach describes the production and capacity expansion processes in the form of differential equations with regular production, overtime and capacity expansion rates controllable on one hierarchical level. In this way, the traditional disadvantages of the two-level problem consideration (one level for strategic capacity planning and the other for production smoothing) are avoided and optimal control policies can be obtained. This approach is of special importance when taking into account highly changing demand profiles and nonlinear cost functions. Study of the maximum principle results in analytical properties for the optimal production and capacity expansion policies and conditions for their changeover. Based on these results, insight into the optimal behaviour of the production system is gained and a fast numeral method is developed to identify and sequence the optimal policies for arbitrary demand profiles. A computational example illustrates the effectiveness of the approach.

摘要:
While there are several conceptual models to suggest that there exists an association between quality dimensions (customer satisfaction, employee satisfaction, employee service quality) and organizational performance, no empirical study to date has verified such claims. This paper extends the literature by collecting hard data from 165 practising managers and testing their perceptions of the association among various quality dimensions and several organizational performance measures. The relationships between these quality dimensions and the nine component items that make up organizational performance were also investigated for both manufacturing and service firms. The data were grouped into four typologies to include type of firm, size, age, and presence of formal quality department. Multiple discriminant analysis was conducted to differentiate the typology of firms in a multivariate setting. Our results indicate that practising managers in manufacturing firms tend to perceive more widely a positive correlation between quality dimensions and the component items of organizational performance than managers in service firms. Also, managers from older manufacturing firms tend not to perceive a relationship between employee service quality and five component items of organizational performance such as competitiveness and market share.
