We compare the performance of a set of rectangular layout heuristics on the basis of their packing densities and time performance, with a view to increase their applicability in manufacturing situations. Among the techniques is a class of heuristics introduced by the authors in an earlier work (Israni And Sanders, 1982). The experimental comparison is made over two attributes defined for the bill of materials; the area and the aspect ratio distributions of the pieces. In addition, some of the heuristics considered permit limited human intervention. Our study shows that the two attributes play a significant part in determining the performance of a heuristic. Length-sorted heuristics are found to perform differently as a class from height-sorted heuristics. The study shows that human intervention, even in limited amounts, usually improves the quality of a solution substantially. The heuristics' worst case time complexities are presented. For certain specific regions of the attributes, the best heuristic has been identified.

摘要:
The object of this paper is to determine the moat economical buffer capacity in the production systems for the manufacture of prefabricated houses using precast concrete panels, via an analysis of the various kinds of buffer systems inherent in those systems Two types of the component (precast concrete panels) are manufactured; a standard metal form for standard components, and a special metal form for the special components required by each individual customer. While the standard forma can be produced beforehand and used for many different projects, the special forms are customized—made-to-order—for each particular project and cannot be produced until the order for that project has been received. Generally, then, manufacturing policy is determined by the average value of standard ratios, that is, the proportion of standard components out of the total number of components of each order.

摘要:
This experimental study was designed to investigate the efficiency of various lot-sizing strategies in multi-echelon production inventory systems. The results obtained through a system dynamics simulation model suggest that integer multiple-lot, sizes are significantly better than non-integer multiple lot sizes. These results can serve as general guidelines for the designer of multi-echelon production inventory systems.

Existing manufacturing control systems largely ignore quality assurance (QA( needs. This paper describes a procedure to incorporate QA information into existing manufacturing information systems in an incremental fashion. In addition to incorporating QA needs in the production stage of the information system, the paper details how to extend the upstream source data capture in the pre-production stage as well as downstream in the post-production stage. where numerous revenue-increasing opportunities exist.

Flow-sbop type production lines with finite buffer storage between operation stations are considered. Operation stations are subject to breakdowns. Operation time and repair time distributions are assumed to be phase-type. Time until a breakdown occurs is exponentially distributed. A Markov chain approach is developed to obtain certain performance measures using a numerical procedure.

摘要:
The problem of determining the optimum location for a single undesirable machine within an existing plant layout is considered. The degree of undesirability between an existing machine or worker and the new machine is reflected through a weighting factor. The problem is defined to be the selection of a location witbin a convex region that maximizes the minimum weighted Euclidean distance with respect to all the existing facilities. A model is formulated and an algorithm developed. As the number of existing facilities increases, however, the computation time increases substantially. A heuristic approach hased on partial enumeration is described. This approach makes it possible to study problems that involve a large number of existing facilities without sacrificing the level of accuracy. The two approaches, exact and heuristic, are compared with respect to their computational efficiency. An example is solved using both approaches.

摘要:
In this paper a mathematical model is developed for an inventory system in which the number of units of acceptable quality in a replenishment lot is uncertain and the demand is partially captive. It is assumed that the fraction of the demand during the stockout period which can be backordered is a random variable whose probability distribution is known. The optimal replenishment policy is synthesized for such a system. A numerical example is used to illustrate the theory. The results indicate that the optimal replenishment policy is sensitive to the nature of the demand during the stockout period.

摘要:
The production of printed circuit board in the electronics industry requires that the taped components at the insertion machines input be in a predetermined order or sequence. The sequencing operation is performed on a microcomputer-controlled sequencing machine which represents a substantial proportion of both the initial capital and direct costs. The sequencing costs are affected by two sequential decisions: sequencer mix or the size and the number of sequencers required to meet the production requirements, and the processing schedule at each sequencer. An integer programming approach is presented for determining the optimum sequencer mix and is illustrated by means of an industrial case study example.

The just-in-time manufacturing system, as developed in the Toyota Motor Co., may be stated as producing or stocking ‘only the necessary items in necessary quantities at the necessary time’. When the just-in-time concept is applied to an industrial material management system, it is called apullsystem, which means that the amount and time of material flow are determined by the rate and time of the actual stock consumption. Actually, in Toyota, this pull system is operated manually by means of akanban, a sort of card or tag.
