摘要:
The design of tool management systems for Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) is analysed. An algorithm is given, which allows performance evaluation of an FMS with its tool management system. The procedure applies queueing network theory in order to estimate important performance parameters. Of particular interest is the tool blocking time, which is defined as the time a machine is idle while it waits for the required tools.

摘要:
The ARTI neural network paradigm employs a heuristic where new vectors arc compared with group representative vectors for classification. ARTI is adapted for the cell formation problem by reordering input vectors and by using a better representative vector. This is validated with both test cases studied in literaure as well as synthetic matrices. Algoriihmns for effective use of ARTI are proposed. This approach is observed to produce sufficiently accurate results and is therefore promising in both speed and functionality. For the automatic generation of an optimal family formation solution a decision support system can be integrated with ARTI.

This paper uses a survey-based methodology to examine the performance impact of Just-In-Time (JIT) purchasing strategies. Over the past decade much has been written concerning JIT philosophies; however, relatively little empirical research has been conducted that evaluates the impact of JTT on performance. Similarly, little work has been performed to evaluate the role of JIT in global competitive strategies. This paper uses contingency theory's environment-strategy-performance relationship to consider vital issues—planning, organizational support, and implementation status—affecting the success of JIT purchasing strategies. The findings suggest that JIT purchasing strategies represent an appropriate response to global competition and that JIT purchasing can have a significant positive impact on performance improvement when adequate planning and support are in place.

The success of the Japanese in the global economy has elicited much interest from both practitioners and academicians. Popular theories suggest that the Japanese do not suffer from the short-term financial focus that plagues many U.S. manufacturers but tend to view decisions based on their long-term consequences. As a result, authors have suggested that the criteria used to assess employee performance in Japan tend to reflect this view. This paper reports the results from eight plants in Japan of five Japanese companies regarding the criteria used to assess employee performance. The types of criteria used at various levels in the management hierarchy as well as the specific criteria used are discussed. Previous studies reported that top level managers were most concerned with non-financial criteria while lower level managers were evaluated by physical type measurements. The results from this study partly contradict these findings in that top-level Japanese managers reported profitability as their most important criteria.

As a result of the impact of information technology on manufacturing, it has been envisaged that a large number of manufacturing organizations in the future will tend to be more coordination-intensive. There is therefore a need for a systems definition tool (or tools) for the analysis and specification of coordination-intensive manufacturing. Similar to the way in which tools such as IDEFo have been developed and used for hierarchical manufacturing structures, such a tool should provide manufacturing systems engineers and managers with an easy-to-use and flexible method of specifying the structure and functionality of these systems. This paper suggests an object-oriented (O-O) systems analysis method to satisfy this requirement, called hierarchical and object-oriented manufacturing systems analysts (HOOM A). This method utilizes the useful features of two general methods of O-O analysis and is developed to support specifically the requirement of systems analysis and definition within the manufacturing context. In addition to enabling the specification of a manufacturing process in terms of objects, HOOM A also provides facilities to deal with the inherent hierarchical structure, and the dynamic aspects of manufacturing operations.

This paper propounds a stochastic methodology—SALB—for the solution of a single-model assembly line balancing, which has been developed in response to the problems associated with the allocation of tasks to work stations, especially where uncertainties (and hence risks) abound. The study adopts the methodology of stochastic modelling, whereby various probability distributions are integrated within a modified COMSOAL algorithm, as a means of addressing the uncertainties associated with key assembly line balancing variables, such as cycle time and task times. The proposed methodology incorporates four objective criteria options—minimizing the number of work stations, minimizing the balance delay, minimizing the cycle time, or a combination of two or more thereof. These are designed and equipped with the capability to generate a range of possible solutions to the assembly line balancing problem, from which an ‘optimal’ solution can be ascertained. The SALB methodology is demonstrated with a case study; the results obtained show that the mode is capable of facilitating valuable foresight, as well as enhance effective cost savings, in the planning, designing and scheduling or work tasks, especially in the face of possible perturbations necessitated by uncertainties in tasks and cycle times.

摘要:
The article describes a computerised approach to the prediction of blank shapes for arbitrarily shaped components which have doubly-curved surfaces. Blank shapes can be developed rapidly using a standard personal computer. In this work, an industrial component has been modelled by a CAD program, its geometric data exported to a special purpose program (DYNSRF) and then its blank shape was predicted. The predicted results were found to be in good accordance with the real blank shape geometry.

A bounded enumeration combining non-linear optimization, heuristic procedure, and mixed integer programming is proposed to solve the capacitated multi-item lot scheduling problem. The combined effect is demonstrated by a better solution to problem data which has been the subject of inquiry and investigation for over 20 years. In addition, the approach avoids the escape from infeasibilily deficiencies of prior solution procedures. The attractiveness of the solution found can be confirmed by the close proximity of the production run frequency to that obtained from the independent solution. Since the independent solution reflects the optimum economic tradeoff between incurring setup costs and inventory carrying costs for each product individually, the advantages of deriving a multi-product production schedule where the frequency of setups conform to these cost relationships are obvious.

The kanban-based operation of a mixed model manufacturing line is studied. Features of the hypothetical manufacturing line modelled are presented in terms of general structure, major components and operational characteristics. Simulation model developed is described and parameters of the base model are given. Experimental design features are discussed with respect to simulation related issues, performance measures, statistical analysis and experimental design clusters. Statistical findings are summarized in tabular format. Non-intuitive behaviour observed in each experiment set is interpreted.

Multiple constraints and conflicting objectives govern the design of cellular manufacturing systems (CMS). The first step towards the design of a CMS is the development of an initial cell design which has evolved as a result of the consideration of a number of practical constraints. This paper presents a multi-layered neural network that can configure alternate cell designs by considering multiple constraints and objectives. These constraints and objectives are embedded within the network as transfer functions which help impose the practical constraints and guide the cell design process. Application of the approach to the configuration of a cellular manufacturing system shows how the neural network can generate alternate user-specified cell configurations which can be constrained by specifying, the availability of duplicate machines or a limit on machine capacities. The technique presented provides a quantitative basis for making important capital investment decisions while configuring cellular manufacturing systems.
