摘要:
This paper presents the economics of broaching operations, as analysed within the framework of concurrent design of the broach tool and its operating conditions. The tool is specified by its cutting teeth—tooth structure, tooth pitch and the number of such teeth—which in turn determine the length of the tool. Its operation is specified by the depth of cut per tooth and by the speed of broaching. Design constraints include broaching machine capabilities and surface finish requirements. A nonlinear mathematical optimization model, which incorporates all design variables and constraints, is developed and used to analyse broach design and operation for an illustrative case.

摘要:
Recent work has shown that computer vision has real potential when applied to the automated measurement of engineering component silhouettes, internal contours and profiles. The present study considers the detailed examination of surface textures using the 3D data arrays which are available using this vision system. Progress has been made towards establishing a model of texture based on vision data and it has been shown that a parameter based on both amplitude and space features could provide an additional control for use in on-line automated inspection of manufactured components. Corresponding stylus data has been employed as the basis for comparison in the current evaluation process. In the field of tribology the automated examination of a wear track using computer vision has demonstrated that the approaches can be integrated so as to provide full information about the overall dimensions, area and texture of a wear scar.

摘要:
We study the effects of JIT order quantities on the purchase of raw materials and of the investments to reduce setup time. We examine the total relevant cost for an integrated inventory model, which unifies the finished product and the raw materials used for manufacturing it. A comparison of the total costs between our JIT model and the conventional ‘economic production quantity’ model suggests that JIT order splitting and investment in setup reduction could be cost-effective.

摘要:
This paper describes an investigation into the effects of machine reliability and transported speeds, factors independent of the product-process relationship, on the performance of individual cells in a flexible manufacturing system. The effects of machine reliability and transporter speeds are investigated in relation to a specific case study environment which incorporates the characteristics of some organizations employing flexible manufacturing technologies.

摘要:
This paper reports on research carried out into structuring modular bills of material (BOM) in a company manufacturing heavy duty truck transmissions. The problems encountered in the application of the conventional option sensitivity approach to bill of material structuring on a sample of the company's products are summarized. The problems are related to dependence on part names and descriptions and the time involved in the task. This is followed by an account of the development of an improved technique (usage pattern analysis) for modularization. The technique is based on the concept that parts belonging to the same module must have identical patterns of usage. The use of the technique, in particular when computer-aided, reduces considerably the time needed for modularization.

摘要:
This paper addresses the problem of optimal tool replacement, specifically the selection of the optimal initial tool setting and the tool replacement cycle. A tool replacement model is derived by assuming tool wear is the most important factor affecting machining accuracy. The economic loss due to the deviation of a part from its target value is characterized by a quadratic function. The model is based on an empirical approach and does not attempt to explain the underlying physics of tool wear.

摘要:
In this paper, a hierarchical neurocontroller for manipulation of a robotic arm is presented. Specifically, two artificial neural network systems are considered. One neural system, at a higher hierarchical level, participates in the motion analysis, and the other, at the lower level, in the process of control emulation. At the higher level the neural system consists of four networks: a restricted coulomb energy (RCE) network to delineate the robot arm workspace, two standard back propagation (BP) networks for coordinates transformation, and a fourth network which also uses BP and participates in the motion decision-making process by cooperating with other knowledge sources. The control emulation process is developed using a second neural system at a lower hierarchical level. This system provides the correct sequence of control actions. An example is presented to illustrate the capabilities of the developed architectures. The two neural systems working at different hierarchical levels provide the robot arm speed, adaptability, and computational efficiency which are desirable in robot schemes.

摘要:
In this paper, a conceptual framework for designing a parts procurement system for international co-operative knockdown production systems is proposed. Two types of pull-type parts procurement models that contain both a backorder function which modifies the backlog carried over from the last period and emergency delivery compensating for component part shortages, are formulated, and the effects of emergency delivery on the probability of stock out and the mean value of shortage quantity is analysed. Using these results, a computational procedure for determining an economic buffer stock level and emergency delivery rate or level which assures system reliability for a given performance level and minimizes the sum of inventory and emergency procurement costs, is presented.

摘要:
A system of two machines running in batches and a central buffer used for storing raw materials, work-in-process, and finished products is considered. The system maintains enough WIP to assure no stockout will happen in the inventories. Each machine has a finite production rate greater than or equal to the demand rate and thus operates with periodic start-ups and shut-downs. For the special case when the cycle time of both machines are equal to the interval between raw material deliveries, the best policy given limited storage space is determined, and total production cost as a function of set-up costs, carrying cost, storage cost, and material handling cost is presented. A heuristic is developed that determines ‘optimal cycle time’ such that the capacity of the central buffer is not exceeded, and at the same time the overall costs are minimized.

摘要:
Just-in-time (JIT) production systems operate effectively if resources are correctly sized in terms of performance and availability. In JIT production lines in particular, performance can be considerably affected by machine reliability and the attendant maintenance policies. In this paper, a single-product, multi-stage manufacturing line with resource failures and controlled by a two card kanban system was modelled using discrete-event simulation. Several performance measures were evaluated to determine optimum operating policies given resource failures. In addition, different maintenance policies were implemented in order to better understand their impact on overall system performance. Several case examples were developed to further provide insight into the problem.
