In a study including 394 men and 339 women, all aged fifty, a positive correlation between cigarette consumption and packed cell volume (PCV) was found in both sexes. In women, we also found a statistically significant correlation between cigarette consumption and haemoglobin concentration. In male cigarette smokers, the incidences of PCV‐values over normal range and of subnormal MCHC‐values were significantly higher than in males, who did not smoke cigarettes (smokers and non‐smokers).We found a statistically significant negative correlation between cigarette consumption and lung function (forced expiratory volume in one second) but we found no evidence of any relationship between lung function and haematological variables. A method forin vivodetermination of the splenic erythrocyte and plasma volume has been developed. Ultrasonic scanning of the splenic region permits not only determination of the shape and topography of the spleen, but also calculation of its volume with great accuracy, using simultaneous computer analysis. Splenic models of a volume as determined by ultrasonic scanning were made of water‐filled balloons and shaped as accurate copies of the scanned spleens. After infusion of known quantities of51Cr‐labelled erythrocytes and125I‐labelled albumin, intravenously and into a model of the patient's spleen, it may be determined – by surface measurements over the spleenin situand over the balloon model – how large a part of the total erythrocyte and plasma volume is localized in the spleen. Heparin aggregated washed platelets in the presence of divalent cations. The aggregation was not significantly influenced by antithrombin III, albumin, or by the presence of serum. The significance of this finding is discussed. Heparin, together with antithrombin III, inhibited the release of platelet adenine nucleotides and also the platelet aggregation induced by thrombin. The side‐effects of a new sustained release oral ferrous sulphate preparation have been evaluated in three separate double‐blind studies. Each tablet contained 100 mg of ferrous iron and the dosage employed in all studies was 2 tablets daily.In a large series of blood donors randomly divided into three groups the frequency and type of side‐effects were compared to ferrous sulphate tablets and placebo.In two series of pregnant women the side‐effects were studied with a cross‐over technique using ferrous sulphate tablets as reference. Placebo was also included as a reference in one of these studies.In all series the frequency of nausea and epigastric pain was about the same for the sustained release preparation as for placebo. In all series ferrous sulphate tablets gave a significantly higher frequency of nausea than the sustained release tablets and placebo. Also the frequency of epigastric pain was found to be higher in blood donors but this could not be verified in pregn

Phagocytosis in vitro of neutrophilic leucocytes from normals and patients with chronic myeloid leukaemia was enhanced in the presence of Clofazimine (B 663), a phenazine derivative. The positive effect was obtained by adding the substance in a crystalline form or in an alcoholic solution at low concentration. With high concentrations of Clofazimine the enhancement was less pronounced.

This investigation was supported by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission Contract AT (30–1) 3590.It is known that chromate uptake by platelets is mediated by a bimodal transport mechanism with a diffusional and a saturable transport component. These models of uptake were studied in rat platelet cohorts of different age, obtained during the recovery phase of thrombocytopenia induced by specific hetero‐antibody. At low concentrations of chromate in the medium the saturable transport mechanism prevailed and was found to be markedly dependent on platelet age. Platelets one day or less in age accumulated more than twice the amount of randomly‐aged platelets. At high concentrations of chromate at which diffusional transport predominates, no difference in total chromate accumulation was noted in these two platelet populations. The inhomogeneous distribution of51Cr in a platelet population may have important bearing on the interpretation of platelet survival curves since by the generally employed labelling method, chromate concentrations are utilized well within the range in which saturable transport prevails and younger platelets are more heavily labelled than older

Stomach preparations from 19 different animal species have been studied for intrinsic factor activity by applying the Schilling test in patients with pernicious anaemia, and by means of in vitro assay with antibody to human intrinsic factor.Stomach preparations from man, pig, cow, ferret, rabbit, rat, and hamster were able to promote vitamin B12absorption in the human intestine. The B12‐binding ability of these preparations was inhibited by antibody to intrinsic factor. Gastric mucosa homogenate from guinea pig was ineffective in the patients but reacted with the antibody to intrinsic factor.Stomach preparations from dog, cat, chicken, toad, frog, black slug, edible snail, lobster, eel, plaice, and sea trout were all inefficacious with the Schilling test as well as with the in vitro assa

The number of decaying lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of the mouse was determined by means of the dye exclusion test. Under normal conditions the lymphocyte decay was very constant (1.1%).Treatment with pertussis vaccine, anti‐lymphocyte serum, and hydrocortisone either alone or in combination greatly influenced the number of decaying blood lymphocytes.Treatment with heparin markedly increased the number of circulating non‐viable lymphocytes, probably due to inhibition of the reticuloendothelial macrophage system. A clinical, cytological and biological study of a 57‐year‐old man with a sideroblastic anaemia is presented. A large population of cells with 47 chromosomes and an extra C chromosome was found in the bone marrow cells but not in skin cells or lymphocytes. The concentration of uracil nucleotides in the bone marrow of the patient was increased.
