A method of using Fe55and Fe59for simultaneous determination of iron absorption, plasma volume, and plasma iron turnover in man is described.The validity of the method was tested and examples of the practical application was given in two subjects with iron deficiency anaemia before and after oral iron therapy.

Evidence is presented for the presence in normal bovine and canine spleen of a material that elevates the platelet count of rabbits. An extraction method and bioassay are outlined. The spleen extract is non‐dialyzable, heat and pH resistant, and exhibits an absorption peak at 265 mμ. Platelet adhesiveness was studied in 8 patients with thrombocythaemia with and without bleeding symptoms.Four patients with haemorhagic thrombocythaemia showed prolonged bleeding time and decreased platelet adhesiveness. Four patients with thrombocythaemia but with normal bleeding time, 3 of whom without bleeding symptoms, had normal adhesiveness.

The serum vitamin B12concentration was estimated in a random sample of two communities; an industrial and an agricultural one. A total of 890 people were studied. The frequency distribution of serum vitamin B12concentration shows that the range of values is wide and that the serum vitamin B12level falls with increasing age. For general purposes the results of this study may be summarised by standardising at age 50 years, using the regression coefficient — 1.254 μμg per ml per year of age, which summarises the gradient with age over the whole age range studied. Thus the adjusted means and standard errors, 255.2 ± 5.45 μμg per ml for the industrial men and 262 ± 10.06 μμg per ml for the women, compare closely with the agricultural community where the figures for the men are 260 ± 9.52 and for the women 272 ± 8.45

1. Amino methyl cyclohexane carboxylic acid is a potent inhibitor of plasminogen activation. A preparation of the active isomer, AMCA, was found to be 6–8 times more potent than ε‐ACA and to have an inhibitory effect demonstrable in a concentration of 10‐4M. AMCA had no antiplasmin effect in concentrations up to 0.15 M.2. In high concentrations, 1 mg per ml blood, AMCA prolonged the thrombin time, but it had no other effect on the coagulation mechanism.3. Metabolic studies showed that the half‐life of AMCA in serum was short, about 1–2 hours. It was rapidly excreted in unchanged form in the urine and 90 per cent of a single intravenous dose of AMCA was excreted from the urine within 24 hours.4. AMCA was given to 50 subjects, including 20 with increased fibrinolytic activity and/or bleeding symptoms. It proved an effective antifibrinolytic agent and stopped bleeding caused by general or local fibrinolysis. Judging fromin vivotests the inhibiting effect of AMCA was about 7 times that of ε‐ACA. – Dizziness occurred in 6 cases, but no other side reactions or toxic effects of the drug were observed.5. AMCA is recommended as a useful clinical fibrinolytic inhibitor. A dosage of 0.015–0.020 g per kg bodyweight given intravenously every 4–6 hours appears to be adequate. From a comparison of the radiation sensitivity of Factor XII with those of three different enzymes, the molecular weight of Factor XII could be estimated at approx. 80,000.

All of 37 cold haemagglutinins isolated from sera of patients with chronic cold haemagglutinin syndrome were shown to containkchains only. When data obtained from other investigators are added, it appears that a total of at least 59 isolated cold haemagglutinins have been found to contain only type K γM‐globulin molecules. In analogy with current views on the structure of the γG‐globulin molecule, it is suggested that each active site of the cold haemagglutinin molecules is made up by a close interaction of the heavy and light polypeptide chains.
