The activity, pH optimum and electrophoretic mobility of platelet glucose‐6‐phosphate dehydrogenase (G6‐PD) was investigated in subjects with severe Mediterranean type G6‐PD deficiency. Enzyme activity was less than 1% of normal in erythrocytes and 20% of normal in platelets. Investigation of pH optimum and electrophoretic mobility indicated that the mutant enzyme was present in the platelets. Normal rabbit sera, absorbed with normal human red cells, contained a γM‐globulin causing reversible agglutination of trypsinised human red cells. In this study, autologous human platelets labelled with31Cr were infused in healthy volunteers and their adhesiveness to glass was repeatedly measured during their survival in the circulation using the Salzman's technique.51Cr‐specific activity was determined seperately for the ‘adhesive’ and ‘non‐adhesive’ platelets and expressed as a ratio of the two values. This ratio was found to be approximately 1 in all the conditions studied. The results indicated: (1) that platelet labellingin vitrowith51Cr did not alter platelet adhesiveness to glass, and (2) that aging of the platelets in the circulation was not associated with a change in their adhesiveness.Other experiments were done using platelets which had been damaged by a 24hour storage at 4°C. before infusion. The results demonstrated that although survival of these platelets was drastically reduced, their adhesive property to glass remained unchanged. As a link in a study on the occurrence of iron deficiency in connection with adolescence a blind test, using iron and placebo, was performed on army recruits. Changes in haematocrit, serum iron, and transferrin in iron‐treated and placebo‐treated subjects were compared. A significant response to iron medication was found in respect to haematocrit (increase) and transferrin (decrease). The haematocrit response to iron was most marked in those subjects who had shown haematocrit values at the upper end of the normal range prior to the test. Maternal AB and sheep cell haemagglutinins were found in the human fetus after the 13th to 14th week of gestation. In fetuses aged 18 weeks or more they were observed as frequently as in full‐term newborns, 56.6% of which had isoagglutinins and 57.6% heteroagglutinins. The occurrence of maternal heteroagglutinins in neonatal sera was not dependent on the ABO group of the mother as it is with isoagglutinins. Heteroagglutinins of the IgG class were found equally in mothers of different ABO groups. Isoagglutinins against erythrocytes of the mother's group were detected in 8 out of 44 neonatal sera, but in none of 10 sera from fetuses aged 14 to 19 weeks. IgM concentrations in neonatal sera with and without isoagglutinins of fetal origin revealed that IgM synthesized by the healthy fetus consists mainly of antibodies other than isoagglutinin

Red cell antigen k occurs in the same frequency and strength as in adults in fetuses of 9 weeks or more and antigens Fya, Fyband Vel in fetuses aged at least twelve weeks. Antigen K was encountered twice, in fetuses of 14 and 16 weeks. Lubappears weaker in fetuses than in adults; it was not detected in a fetus of 9 weeks although both parents were Lu(a–b+).
