Routine haematological monitoring of 6 deep‐sea divers was performed pre‐dive, during the three phases of the 350 m working dive, and at two post‐dive medical examinations. In the compression phase a small percentage (<5%) of each subject's red cells became non‐discoid in shape and this trend continued during the 6 d at 350 m. Concomitantly each subject was mildly dehydrated by compression diuresis and had a raised haematocrit (+ 5%); all other haematological parameters remained within normal limits. The number of morphologically aberrant cells continued to increase during decompression but were not present at the 1 month post‐dive medical examination. The subjects' mean relative reticulocyte number was decreased during the dive to 0.4%, showing a rapid and sustained increase to 2.1% at both post‐dive examinations. In 20 patients with chronic neutropenia, serum lactoferrin (S‐LF) and serum myeloperoxidase (S‐MPO) levels were assessed. By immunofluorescence, granulocyte‐bound immunoglobulins were detected in 12 patients, whereas circulating immune complexes were found in the blood of 8 patients by the125‐I‐Clq‐binding test (Clq‐BT). In both groups of patients, there was a relative increase of S‐LF and a relative or sometimes absolute increase of S‐MPO. In the latter group, results of the Clq‐BT correlated positively with S‐MPO but negatively with neutrophil counts. No correlations between S‐LF or S‐MPO and the results of the granulocyte immunofluorescence test were found. The uptake of tritium‐labelled thymidine in bone marrow mononuclear cells from 22 untreated patients with Rai stage 0‐II chronic B‐lymphocytic leukaemia was analysed in 4‐d in vitro cultures. The thymidine uptakes showed a great interindividual variability; the counts per min ranged from 1100 to 80000 (mean 26360 ± 21800 cpm). Bone marrow cells from patients who needed treatment within 1 yr from diagnosis had a lower thymidine uptake than those from patients who were untreated for more than 2 yr (7820 ± 7420 and 34 300 ± 23 200 cpm, respectively, p<0.001). The haematological findings in 212 patients with brucellosis are presented, analysed, and the possible underlying pathogeneses discussed. Pancytopenia and other haematological abnormalities were frequently found among the clinical features. As brucellosis is common in our region, and pancytopenia is a common presentation, it should be included in the differential diagnosis of all those clinical conditions leading to pancytopenia.

Membrane redistribution of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class I and II antigens on human B lymphocytes and monocytes was studied quantitatively by fluorescence flow cytometry using monoclonal antibodies (mAb) w6.32 (class I‐specific) and 2MC3 (class II‐specific). It was shown that the surface density of class I and II antigens to which corresponding mAb had been bound decreased rapidly upon incubation at 37°C. However, the total amount of class I antigens remained practically unchanged, while that of class II antigens increased substantially. This augmentation of class II antigens could be elicited not only by the corresponding class II‐specific mAb but, similarly, also by non‐corresponding class I‐specific mAb. New expression of class I antigens only compensated for removed antigens. The speed of disappearance was comparable for antigens of either class. We conclude that the more pronounced expression of new class II antigens is not due to a greater surface mobility, but to a faster recycling and/or larger intracellular deposits of the antigens. A prospective randomized study of androgen therapy in aplastic anaemia (AA) was performed: 2 androgens (fluoxymesterone and norethandrolone) at high (1 mg/kg/d) and low (0.2 mg/kg/d) dose were studied on 110 patients; and 4 androgens given at high doses were objectively compared in 125 other cases. When patients are matched for AA severity there is an obvious efficiency of the high‐dose androgens in the survival of the less severe cases of aplastic anaemia and in their haematological improvement. The data further show that, among the 4 androgens tested, fluoxymesterone is the most efficient and stanozolol the least. We conclude that androgen therapy is truly efficient in moderately. severe aplastic anaemia and that fluoxymesterone (1 mg/kg/d) for 18 months should be chosen as reference drug to any new androgen therapy assa

The overall metabolism in tumour cells from 36 untreated patients with non‐Hodgkin lymphoma was evaluated by direct calorimetry. For 20 patients with lymphoma of high grade malignancy the median value of heat production rate per tumour cell was 3.9 pW and for 16 patients with low grade lymphomas the corresponding value was 2.8 pW. The difference between the two morphclogical groups is significant (p = 0.05). The median value of heat production rate per tumour cell from 13 patients who died within 2 yr after diagnosis was 4.0 pW. The corresponding value for 17 patients who have survived for more than 2 yr was 2.5 pW. The difference between the two groups is significant (p = 0.02). A high correlation was found between heat production rates in tumour cells and survival of the patients (p = 0.006

This report documents phorbol ester‐induced changes in cell morphology in 9 patients with hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) and contrasts them with those obtained in cells from 20 patients with B‐type chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and non‐Hodgkin's lymphoma in leukaemic phase (NHL). The phorbol ester caused hairy cells to adhere strongly and produce thin elongated cytoplasmic extensions. Other cells showed marked surface ruffling, and contained increased numbers of phagolysosomes, although cells still retained ribosomal lamellar complexes. This in vitro growth pattern differed from that observed in B‐CLL and NHL cells, which readily detached in clumps with minimal adherence. CLL and NHL‐cells did not show macrophage features but developed plasmacytoid and hairy cell‐like features. 94 patients with Hodgkin's disease PS I or II, treated during the period 1969–78 and followed until death, or from 33 to 136 months after initiation of therapy, were analysed. 47 patients had been treated with radiotherapy alone (mantle field irradiation and, in all but 12 cases, irradiation of infradiaphragmatic lymph nodes), while the other 47 had been treated with mantle field irradiation plus 6 cycles of combination chemotherapy (MOPP or an equivalent regimen). Of the patients treated with radiotherapy alone, 13 relapsed whereas only 1 of the patients treated with radiotherapy plus combination chemotherapy relapsed. The initial tumour burden of each patient was estimated, combining tumour size of each involved area and number of sites involved. The remission duration (RD) of 22 adult acute myelogenous leukaemia patients who received maintenance rifampicin treatment during 24 episodes was significantly longer than RD in 29 complete remission patients who received conventional maintenance chemotherapy (25 versus 9 months, p<0.003). Although this study was not randomized, the observed RD in the rifampicin group suggests a suppressive activity upon regrowth of residual disease in acute myelogenous leukaemia during apparent complete remission.
