Total haemolytic complement activity, C2, C5, total alternative pathway activity, factor B, and C3d were measured in 85 splenectomized patients from 1 month to 32 years after splenectomy. Furthermore the patients were investigated for circulating immune complexes. No major deficiences of the complement factors were detected. In a few patients a reduced C2 level was caused by genetically determined defects or was due to complement consumption in conjunction with circulating immune complexes. The complement levels were normal in 2 patients who had survived overwhelming infections after splenectomy. C5 was elevated in a major proportion of the patients, and it is suggested that this might be caused by post‐splenectomy monocytosis. Circulating immune complexes were found in 20% of all cases, irrespective of the presence of residual splenic tissue. Thus the commonly cited impairment of the complement system after splenectomy does not seem to be substantiated, and the deficient resistance against bacterial infections in splenectomized patients does not seem to include abnormalities of the complement syste

Intensive plasmapheresis was performed on 7 alloimmunized pregnant women. About 60% of the plasma volume was removed each day, Monday to Friday, with pauses over the weekends. This treatment resulted in drops in immunoglobulin levels to about 1/3 of the pre‐treatment concentrations, whereas the haemostatic parameters studied remained within normal limits. Thus, generally the treatment (as performed in this study) does not seem to induce changes that predispose for thrombotic or haemorrhagic complications. However, in one of the patients, antithrombin III became progressively depleted over the weeks of treatment. 2 cases of acute leukaemia in which the precise diagnosis was established using the immunoperoxidase technique on particle sections, a method not usually employed for acute leukaemias, are reported. Morphologially and cytochemically these cases were initially diagnosed as acute megakaryoblastic (case 1) and acute monocytic (case 2) leukaemia. Based on the immunoperoxidase studies, these diagnoses were corrected to DiGuglielmo's disease (case 1) and plasma cell leukaemia (case 2).

A case of B‐CLL in prolymphocytic transformation is described in which large numbers of peripheral blood mononuclear cells possess surface immunoglobulin and rosetted with AET‐treated sheep erythrocytes (SIg+E+), but lacked specific T‐cell antigens. The SIg (MDGK) was shown to be an intrinsic product of the cell, whose B‐cell nature was confirmed by staining with BA1, a specific anti‐B‐cell monoclonal antibody. The E positivity resembled the rosetting of normal T cells in certain important respects but was weak, and aberrant in certain other respects. Although E rosetting was blocked with anti‐x and anti‐D but not with anti‐Λ, extensive blocking studies with a panel of monoclonal antibodies indicated that this was due to steric hindrance of weak E receptor rather than specific blocking of SIg possessing anti‐E activity. 12 Jordanian patients from 9 families with Glanzmann's thrombasthenia are described. All of them are products of consanguinous marriages. All cases are children with varying severity of mucosal bleeding. The clinical and laboratory findings are described. The importance of consanguinity is discussed and emphasized. Glanzmann's thrombasthenia is the second most common inherited haemorrhagic disorder in Jordan.

The bone marrow karyotype was investigated in 98 patients with acute non‐lymphocytic leukaemia (ANLL). The patients were divided into two groups according to age.(1) 47 patients were 20–54 (median 40) years old. 21 had a history of occupational exposure to chemical solvents, insecticides, or petrol products, and 26 were considered occupationally not having been exposed to such agents. In 4 exposed patients (19%) all bone marrow cells had clonal chromosomal aberrations (designated AA), while also 4 of the non‐exposed patients (15%) were AA. Thus in young ANLL patients, there was no significant association between occupational exposure to potential mutagenic/carcinogenic agents and the AA constitution of the leukaemic cells.(2) 51 patients were 55 years of age or older (median 65 years). 16 were exposed and 8 of these (50%) had the AA constitution. 35 patients were non‐exposed and only 4 (11%) were AA. It is known from previous studies that the survival of ANLL patients with AA is extraordinarily short. Accordingly the overrepresentation of AA in exposed patients 55 years or older, was associated with a shorter survival than that of the non‐exposed elderly patients. Human bone marrow cells from normal subjects were density‐separated in continuous density gradients of the Percoll medium. The distribution of cells showed a linear relationship between morphologic maturation and increasing density. The method was used to characterize the target cell of the growth‐stimulating effect of ultrasonically irradiated (UI) serum. All experiments showed that a distinct cell population of higher density contained the target cells, corresponding to the distribution of early myelocytes. Furthermore, the target cell was shown not to contain the Ialike antigen and was destroyed by freezing, both facts supporting the assumption of a relatively mature target cell.It is concluded that the divisions at the myelocytic level might be under the influence of a serum factor, unmasked by UI treatm
