摘要:
Of the various unstable motions observed in solid propellant rocket chambers, the most troublesome currently are those involving oscillatory motions parallel to the axis. Such instabilities are found to arise particularly in larger rockets using propellants which contain aluminum. The problem is formulated here in one-dimensional form and solved for the case of small amplitude standing waves. Both pressure and velocity coupling may be accommodated, although the proper description of the response function for velocity coupling is not yet known. In addition to several special cases, the stability boundary is discussed for a straight chamber having variable cross section. The influences of the mean flow field, the nozzle, particulate matter, and motions of the solid propellant grain are taken into account.

摘要:
A mathematical model of a turbulent diffusion buoyant flame based on a number of simplifying assumptions is presented. The model predicts the general characteristics of a free-burning fire in both the region where combustion is occurring and the hot gas plume formed above the combustion section. The solution yields the mass-flow rate as a function of height which can be directly related to the excess air. It was found that the height at which 400% excess air has been entrained corresponds to the visible flame height according to data taken in our laboratory as well as that presented by a number of other workers.

摘要:
Certain limiting but exact solutions of the heat transport and chemical kinetic equations are combined with physical intuition to obtain an analytical solution of the ignition of a combustible material, assuming ignition to be the result of an adiabatic first order surface reaction. The derived equations are used to predict the ignition behavior of cellulose, and the results are shown to be in good agreement with published experimental ignition data on cloth. The theory is also used to analyze some published experimental ignition data on composite propellants, and the results agree with the published numerical solution of the equations used to describe the data. In general, the developed analytical solution appears to give essentially the same results and predicted ignition characteristics as this numerical solution, Some implications regarding the ignition mechanism of cellulose and the thermal surface ignition of explosives are also discussed.

摘要:
Experimental results are reported of the self-deflagration of the solid oxidizers hydroxylammonium perchlorate and hydrazine nitroform. The burning rate-pressure relationships were measured and combustion temperatures were determined. Quenching diameters were also measured for these two oxidizers plus ammonium perchlorate. Two findings of significance have emerged: first, hydroxylammonium perchlorate exhibits a low-pressure deflagration limit of 146 atm, analogous to the 20 atm limit of ammonium perchlorate. This high value obtains in spite of aflame temperature for HAP that is 100° higher than that of AP; and in spite of the fact that at pressures at which HAP does burn, it burns two to three times more rapidly than AP. Comparison of results for several oxidizers suggests that AP should be regarded as exhibiting an unusually low low-pressure limit. The second item of importance is an hypothesis that ammonium perchlorate deflagration occurs by a cellular mechanism. A simplified analysis of the AP combustion process in such terms lends excellent support to this contention.

摘要:
Evaporation and combustion of coldn-pentane droplets injected into a hot oxidizing gas at moderate pressures was observed with high speed motion picture photography. High-quality photographs showed details of the flame structure. Droplets were clearly seen even above the critical pressure. Droplet wake flames at all pressures resembled a candle flame. A zone of carbon growth in the near wake was followed by a luminous zone of carbon oxidation in the far wake.
