The computational efforts required for the stepping-stone algorithm to solve the transportation problem can be reduced by carrying out the transformation of the reduced coststhroughout basis changes in the following way. Using a method of R. BELLMAN, I. GLICKSBERG and O. GROSS there is given an explicit solution of a class of one-dimensional optimal control problems (1), (2) with the restrictions (A), (B) by reduction to the minimax problem, which was treated in part I of the paper. Especially the cases of an ordinary and a partial differential equation of first order as equation of state are considered.

A class of probabilistic constrained programming problems are considered wherethe probabilistic constraint is of the formand the functionsare concave. I t is shown that the function of the left hand side is logarithmic concave provided ξ has a logarithmic concave density. Special cases are mentioned and algorithmic solution of problems containing such constraint is discussed.

This paper deais with the steady-state behaviour of a queueing proeess in whichunits demanding one phase or two phase service arrivo with a Porssoa stream andform two queuesQ1andQ2in front, of two service channelsS1andS2respectively.Furthermore units demanding two phase service join a single queueQ3for the completion of their service in front of another serverS3of the system after getting the first.phase service fromS1orS2.If we assume ordered service as our queue discipline and exponential service times for each channel, then we drive for the system steady-state mean queue lengths and some particular cases thereof.

This paper studies the time independent solution of a queueing system wherein units demanding one, two or three service phases arrive with a POISSON POISSON stream at the first channel of the system of three service channelsS1,S2andS3. The server S, attends to units which on being serviced may leave the system (those having only one service phase) or enter any of the two serversS2andS3of the system. On the other hand, the serverS2attends to those units which on being serviced byS2leave the system or enter the serverS3of the system. The service discipline at each service channel is assumed to be 'first-come, first-served', and the service times have been assumed to be distributed exponentially with different service parameters. The expressions for the mean queue length of the system for finite and infinite queueing spaces have been found out. Some particular cases have also been discussed..

In this paper we discuss the problem of estimating the residual variance σ2in the linear regression model. We assume that the components of the random vector ∈ are stochastically independent but we do not suppose that the k-xtosis of the distribution, β – 3, is equal to zero. I t isinvestigated when a quadratic estimator of σ2is best quadratic estimator or best quadratic unbiased estimator. Especially the question is of interest under which conditions a multiple of the projection-matrixleads to such estimator. In both cases the Hsu-condition necessary and sufficient. Imposing positive-definiteness on the estimator does not weaken this eondition. The obtained estimators are show-n to be positive-semi-definite if ∣β – 3∣ < 2.For the practical applicability the question is what is to do if β is unknown. For this purpose admissible quadratic estimators of σ2are determined. The proofs of the theorems are based on a general projection theorem for quasi-inner prodncts which is given in section 2.

The X test proposed by VAN DER WAERDEN is a nonpararnetric procedure for testing whether two independently drawn samples result from the same population VAN DER WAERDEN and NIEVERGELT have also given a table of critical values of this X test, but it is too smail for some practical purposes. I n the present pape.the table has been enlarged and checked thereat. Here the critical values are calculated by a new asymptotic formula. developed in the paper. Generally the accuracy of the so obtained approximative values is better than the former used ones.
