摘要:
A partial phase diagram of the potassiumN-tetradecanoyl-L-alaninate/decanol/water (+10 per cent CsCI) system has been charted using polarizing microscopy, laser diffraction, and NMR spectroscopy. At low amphiphile concentrations, a chiral nematic ChDphase with disc-like micelles occurs and at higher concentrations there occur a chiral nematic, ChCphase with cylindrical micelles and a chiral version of a dimensionally-ordered (probably rectangular or hexagonal) phase. Between the Chcphase and the genuine isotropic liquid there is a chiral isotropic phase which appears to be a micellar analogue of a thermotropic blue phase. This isotropic chiral Icphase showed flow birefringence.

摘要:
Novel liquid crystalline compounds based on 5-methyl-5′-(4-n-alkoxyphenylvinyl)-2,2′-bipyridine were synthesized and their mesomorphic properties investigated. All members of this series exhibit nematic, smectic A and smectic B phases. For the octyloxy compound an hexatic phase is also observed.

Esterification of 2,2′-bipyridine-5,5′- and 4,4′-dicarboxylic acids with 4-alkoxyphenols leads to new mesomorphic bipyridine esters. The synthesis and properties of the compounds are discussed and compared with some carbocyclic analogues.

摘要:
Following our discovery of liquid crystals based on octahedral manganese(I), we have now extended these studies to the synthesis of what we believe to be unique examples of mesomorphic rhenium-based complexes. These complexes offer advantages over the related manganese(I) systems in that they are more thermally stable. Further, modification of the organic backbone has led to lower melting manganese materials.

摘要:
We describe here a novel technique which makes use of the photothermal mirage effect to study phase transition in liquid crystals. Results of the measurements done with two nematic liquid crystals are given to illustrate this technique. We observe an enhancement in the signal amplitude during phase change which is due to the large magnitude of the refractive index gradient developing at the transition temperature.

摘要:
The angular dependence of the surface anchoring energy of the nematic liquid crystal 5CB on a bistable surface is measured using a twist-cell method. Anchoring bistability is obtained by a grazing SiO evaporation on glass. The data obtained are in good agreement with the simplest fourth order expansion in terms of the order parameter. The bistable anchoring is weak.
