摘要:
To estimate the age distribution of a fish population, a two-phase stratified sample design is proposed. Bayesian methods are employed to determine (a) optimal estimators of the desired population proportions; and (b) the optimal choice of second-phase sample sizes subject to a fixed budget. A summary of the results of some numerical examples is presented. These examples demonstrate typical expected gains obtained by using the Bayesian optima as compared to alternative choices of second-phase sample sizes suggested in the substantive literature.

摘要:
A class of two-way random-effects models is presented for analyzing data that arise in a large variety of round robin designs. Examples of such designs can be found in numerous games, tournaments, and social interactions. The proposed models provide information not only about individual differences but also about the mutual contingency of the behaviors of interaction dyads. The statistical inference of the linear effects is discussed and a converging algorithm based on the EM algorithm is proposed for obtaining the maximum likelihood estimates of the covariance components. A balanced data set is analyzed using the methodology developed.

摘要:
The article develops the structure and estimates the parameters of a nonlinear learning model applicable to research designs in which students are tested at the beginning and end of a course of study. A student's precourse score is an error-ridden proxy for his precourse aptitude. As a remedy for this problem, the article combines a probit model of test score outcomes, a learning function, and a linear equation relating aptitude to demographic characteristics to deduce the exact test score distribution. An empirical example of maximum likelihood estimation of the model's parameters is presented.

摘要:
Recent data seasonally adjusted by moving average methods are subject to revisions due to differences in the properties of the linear filters for the same seasonal adjustment when later data become available. This article introduces a measure of the total revision associated with the concurrent and forecasting seasonal filters and applies it to the Census Method II-X-11 variant and the X-11-ARIMA method. To consider the fact that the spectrum of many economic indicators tends to have higher peaks at the lower seasonal frequencies than at the higher, the revision measures are calculated both over all the seasonal frequencies and over selected seasonal frequency intervals.

摘要:
The objectives of the seasonal adjustment of monthly economic time series are discussed. The design of seasonal adjustment methods of the moving average type is formulated in terms of a linear programming problem. A moving average is designed, using this technique, to seasonally adjust current data. The designed moving average is compared to the X-11 current data moving average in both the time and the frequency domains.

摘要:
Occasional large errors in data can have drastic effects on estimates for such quantities as correlation coefficients, regression coefficients, and spectral density estimates. In this article we investigate the effect of outliers on time series data by considering the influence function for the autocorrelationsp(k) of a stationary time series. This influence function matrix is applied to simulated data, to power plant data, and to inventory data on nuclear materials.

摘要:
We consider the problem of estimating a probability density from observations from that density which are further contaminated by random errors. We propose a method of estimation using spline functions, discuss the numerical implementation of the method, and prove its consistency. The problem is motivated by the analysis of DNA content obtained by microfluorometry, and an example of such an analysis is included.

摘要:
A modified Newton algorithm for the estimation of parameters in models containing the Box-Cox transformation is presented. It is shown that the usual maximum likelihood estimator for theklinear parameters and thempower transformation parameters may be specified as anm-parameter nonlinear least squares estimator. Several models containing Box-Cox transformations are estimated and the speed and efficiency of the modified algorithm compared with three other gradient estimation techniques. The modified Newton algorithm obtains the same parameter estimates, but two to four times faster.

摘要:
In a graphical procedure for comparingktreatment means in a one-way ANOVA, one displays uncertainty intervals around the sample means and judges any pair to be significantly different if and only if their uncertainty intervals do not overlap. A graphical procedure is a Multiple Comparison Procedure (MCP) if and only if it controls the experimentwise error rate. In this paper we consider some new graphical MCP's for the unbalanced one-way ANOVA design. These procedures are based on different approximations to the Tukey-Kramer (TK) procedure (e.g., Kramer 1956). As such, they constitute alternatives to Gabriel (1978) (and its modification by Andrews, Snee, and Sarner 1980), which is based on approximating a less efficient MCP (the GT2 of Hochberg 1974). Two of the four procedures considered here are based on best and simple upper bounds to all the confidence-interval lengths of the TK method and hence must be conservative. The other two procedures are based on approximations (here too we have the best vs. the simple procedure), but simulations were used to find that their true experiment-wise error rates are less than the nominal ones; that is, these procedures are still on the conservative side. The choice of a particular procedure will depend then on the relative importance of simplicity, efficiency, and the security of having a controlled experimentwise error rate.
