摘要:
The local administrative units used to define internal migration vary greatly in size and shape from country to country. Because no statistical procedure has been devised to correct for the variation, it has not been possible to compare in a very exact manner different countries in terms of the amount of geographic mobility within their borders. One way of circumventing the problem is to ignore migration-defining areas altogether and to consider all moves. This article examines statistics on residential mobility for the United States, Canada, Great Britain, and Japan.

The cube law, which has a history of several decades,1may be stated as follows. Consider a two-party system and suppose that the representatives of the two parties are elected according to a single-member district system. Then the ratio of the numbers of representatives elected is approximately equal to the third power of the ratio of the national votes obtained by the two parties. The objective of this note is to provide a theoretical argument which predicts the mathematical form of this relationship.

摘要:
The limiting distribution of frequencies of frequencies as the population size becomes large is obtained under Bose-Einstein and Maxwell-Boltzmann forms of the classical occupancy problem, when the number of cells is random and has a prior distribution. A rich variety of limiting distributions is obtained, including weak forms of Zipf's Law and the Fisher logarithmic series distribution. Lizards are compared to the weak form of Zipf's Law, and some speculations are made in regard to this law.

This article presents an elementary statistical model from which inferences in the form of probability statements are drawn. These are compared with the inferences derived from the corresponding classical and Bayesian models of the same phenomenon. The example concerns a measuring device, and the problem of calibration is discussed. The method of analysis extends to a wide range of common statistical applications, notably those described by multivariate and linear regression models.

Applying the result of expectations of non-negative random variables, inequalities for the one-sided and two-sided rectangular probabilities of higher-dimensional multivariate normal and multivariatetdistributions are obtained. It is shown that theirk-dimensional rectangular probabilities is lower bounded by the (k/m)th power of theirm-dimensional rectangular probabilities for everyk≥m≥ 1, and this bound is quite good whenk/mis close to one. Applications to multiple decision problems are considered.

All known theorems of the Darmois-Koopman-Pitman type are based on the assumption of absolutely continuous probabilities. In this article, a Darmois-Koopman-Pitman type theorem is proved for families of probability measures that are defined on discrete sample spaces. Two assumptions are imposed on the sufficient statistic for the family: (1) the range space of the sufficient statistic can be completely ordered, and (2) this ordering of the range space of the sufficient statistic has a certain regularity property. Under (1) and (2), it can be proved that the given family is exponential of order 1.

The lack of memory property of the exponential distribution plays an important part in the branch of applied probability. This property assumes the information regarding the probability distribution. In the present paper we give a characteristic property of the exponential distribution based on the means of the conditional distributions. Considering a random variableTwith finite mean and such thatP(T> 0) > 0, and denoting byya positive number such thatP(T>y) > 0, we show thatThas an exponential distribution if and only if the mean of the conditional distribution, givenT>y, exceeds the mean of the unconditional distribution by the quantityyfor ally.Also given in the paper is a similar characterization for the geometric distribution. Since the information concerning the expected values is easily accessible, we expect these properties to be useful in dealing with the practical problems.

For the problem of efficiency-robust estimation of location, approximate versions are developed of optimally robust Pitman-type estimators. These are shown to have full asymptotic efficiency for a prototype family of distributions, used to define the estimators. The asymptotic efficiency under other distributions of interest is also characterized. For sample sizesn= 20, 30, 40, 50, and 100 the efficiencies were estimated by Monte Carlo methods under the following distributions: normal, logistic, double-exponential, and contaminated normal (one percent, five percent, ten percent). Over all these shapes the efficiencies obtained are approximately 88 percent or more for alln; they rise to approximately 91 percent or more forn= 100. Some theoretical and numerical comparisons with other estimators are given.
