摘要:
This note evaluates the forecasting accuracy of the index of consumer sentiment constructed by the Michigan Survey Research Center. For the most part, other analyses have focused on the interpretation which should be given to an attitude variable or broadly described movements of the index of consumer sentiment in the vicinity of cyclical turning points. None of the studies have compared the accuracy of equations in which the attitude index is an independent variable against naive forecasting models.

摘要:
This paper presents statistical evidence, which seems to be conclusive, that there exists a particular pattern of mortality in Ceylon, India and Pakistan where, contrary to general experience, female mortality is higher than that of the males. The sex ratios of the enumerated population in these three countries are among the highest in the world, and the age pattern of the sex ratios is such that they increase from childhood to adulthood to the old ages. Abnormally high sex ratios and selective migration cannot account for this particular pattern, but there is evidence of a higher degree of under-enumeration of females than males. The main responsible factor, however, seems to be higher female mortality, in the ages of maternity as well as in childhood. This shows the need for a regional or local approach to some demographic problems. In this case, for instance, model life tables based on average international experience are not representative.

摘要:
Data editing by a computer program can be regarded as a form of statistical quality control. In that perspective, costs and benefits of alternative programs can be compared to one another and, of course, to no control plan at all. This paper outlines one approach to cost-benefit comparison and utilizes a realistic example to suggest that computerized data editing is generally superior to clerical editing. It also warns against edit programs which provide for record rejections and off-line review. Most importantly, it urges that a systematic comparison of costs can assist significantly in edit planning.

摘要:
It is common practice to assume that inspectors of sample items and correctors of items in rejected work lots carry out their job without error and invariably classify defectives and nondefectives correctly. This assumption does not agree with experience in data processing activities, especially those requiring interpretation and judgment as well as clerical or machine skills.

摘要:
The size and power of Student'st-test are discussed under weaker than normal conditions. It is shown that assuming only a symmetry condition for the null hypothesis leads to effective bounds on the dispersion of thet-statistic. (The symmetry condition is weak enough to include all cases of independent but not necessarily identically distributed observations, each symmetric about the origin.) The connection between Student's test and the usual non-parametric tests is examined, as well as power considerations involving Winsorization and permutation tests. Simultaneous use of different one-sample tests is also discussed.

摘要:
The subsample values of a statistictare the values oftfor subsets of the whole sample. Subsample values may be used as indicators of variability oft.For real valued statisticst, estimating a parameter θ, the subsample values are defined to form a set of typical values if the intervals between the ordered subsample values each include θ with equal probability. The typical value property holds exactly in some cases and approximately in others.

摘要:
The problem considered here is a multivariate generalization of the classical Behrens-Fisher problem. Based on samples of sizeni,i= 1, …,k, fromkmultivariate normal populations (of perhaps different dimension), a test statistic is proposed to test null hypotheses about linear relationships between components of the mean vectors of thekpopulations. Under the null hypothesis, the test statistic has a centralFdistribution and under alternatives, a non-centralFdistribution. For three different specializations of the above problem, the proposed test statistic reduces to tests proposed by Scheffé, Bennett, and Anderson respectively.

摘要:
The principle of minimum discrimination information estimation is employed to obtain RBAN (Regular Best Asymtotically Normal) estimates of the cell frequencies of anr×rcontingency table under hypotheses of either symmetry or marginal homogeneity. For the latter, a convergent iterative procedure is given to compute the estimates. The associated minimum discrimination information statistics are distributed asymptotically as χ2under the null hypotheses. The procedures differ from those previously presented in the literature and permit of extension to multidimensional contingency tables. An example is given.

摘要:
The problem of choosing a sample of a fixed size from a finite population is studied in the framework of Bayes designs. The conjectured non-randomized character of Bayes designs is verified. Bayes designs are shown to be without replacement selections, which are generally sequential ones. Sufficient conditions are provided for the optimality of single-phase designs. An example is provided of a case in which the optimal Bayes design is sequential.
