摘要:
A new way of constructing uniformly better estimators (in the sense of minimum variance) from two independent unbiased estimators is presented. The problem of weighting estimators, when the ratio of their variances is unknown, is not straightforward. Yet this problem is particularly important in the recovery of inter-block information in balanced incomplete blocks. The theorem given in this paper suggests a simple method of constructing “better” estimators. The theorem has application in the analysis of balanced incomplete block designs; an example is given.

摘要:
A population ofNunits is considered. It is assumed that each unit has a “size measure,”pi, associated with it (Σpi= 1). A sample ofnunits is to be selected one by one without replacement and in such a way that the probability for thei-th unit to be in the sample isnpi. To achieve this a method is proposed whereby the probability for thei-th unit to be selected is equal topiat each of thensuccessive selections. The procedure may be applied to one-stage sampling or to multi-stage sampling. In the latter case a self-weighting estimator is supplied, which is applicable even in the case where the sample at subsequent surveys is partially replaced (“rotating sample”).

摘要:
In this paper we consider three well-known procedures of unequal probability sampling without replacement. Using an asymptotic approach, Hartley and Rao [3] have obtained compact expressions for variance and estimated variance for one of these procedures. Here we develop formulae for variance and estimated variance for the other two procedures, using their asymptotic approach. It is shown that for large and moderate size populations the three procedures have almost the same variance so that there is little to choose between the three procedures on the basis of variance alone. Therefore, some discussion of other factors for choosing between the three procedures is given.

摘要:
In many experiments the background evidence, theories, or conditions suggest an expectedorderingamong the treatment effects, yet in the analysis of variance such implicit hypotheses are typically neglected. A ranking statisticLis presented as test of a monotonic relationship among the treatment groups in the two-way analysis of variance. Used with accompanying table ofL, it combines considerable power with computational ease, and assumes data of only ordinal strength.Lis related to the test of the linear component of the treatment sum of squares in the parametric randomized-block design, to the product-moment correlation and regression, to the normal deviate test of Lyerly's average rho, and to Friedman's chi-square of ranks. Where eitherLor the Friedman test may be used,Lis often more accurate and appropriate, and it has some advantages over other tests of trend and monotonicity.

摘要:
This paper studies the problem of variable scaling and recommends the use of “functional” characteristics as descriptive measures of central tendency and variability for a population (or probability distribution). It gives, in the case of a lognormal population, the minimum variance unbiased estimates of the median (geometric mean) and the logarithmic variance. Applications to time series are mentioned.

摘要:
A procedure for forming hierarchical groups of mutually exclusive subsets, each of which has members that are maximally similar with respect to specified characteristics, is suggested for use in large-scale (n> 100) studies when a precise optimal solution for a specified number of groups is not practical. Givennsets, this procedure permits their reduction ton− 1 mutually exclusive sets by considering the union of all possiblen(n− 1)/2 pairs and selecting a union having a maximal value for the functional relation, or objective function, that reflects the criterion chosen by the investigator. By repeating this process until only one group remains, the complete hierarchical structure and a quantitative estimate of the loss associated with each stage in the grouping can be obtained. A general flowchart helpful in computer programming and a numerical example are included.

摘要:
In this paper the correlation between the mean and certain linear functions of Order Statistics are obtained for samples from any population and the results for the symmetrical population are derived therefrom. The results obtained in this paper answer in part a question raised by Ostle and Steck in their 1959 paper [2].
