Double sample tests are presented for testing one-sided hypotheses about the mean of a normal population, based on the statistics suggested by Bulgren, Dykstra and Hewett [4]. Tables of decision values are given based on the criterion that the power curves of the double sample test and the corresponding single sample test are approximately the same. A discussion of the numerical methods is presented, as well as a comparison of expected sample sizes for a particular example.

For a normally distributed random variable with unknown mean θ and known variance, optimum double sampling tests of strength (θ1, α, θ2, β) are found and compared with the single sampling test and the SPRT of the same strength. Two optimality criteria are used—minimax ASN and Bayes ASN. Tables of these optimum tests are given. Approximations to optimum double sampling tests for Poisson and binomially distributed variables are discussed.

We consider the problem of constructing a fixed-width confidence interval for the difference between the means of two normal populations with unknown variances. A Stein-type two-stage procedure is presented and some of its properties are investigated. It is shown that the procedure is generally more efficient than Chapman's [1] solution.

This article derives bounds on a wide class of moments of the underlying distribution from data grouped in intervals when the mean of each group is given. The extremal distributions are constructed yielding the upper and lower bounds to moments of the form ∫h(x)dF(x), whereh(x) is convex andF(x) is concave. To illustrate the results, bounds on the variance and Gini index are presented for two theoretical distributions.

Analysis of dependent probability systems of a moderate to large finite number (m) of events must often be based solely on the partial system information given byS1, the sum of the probabilities of occurrence of themindividuaf events; andS2, the sum of the probabilities of occurrence of each of the (m2) pairs of events. This information is used to develop the most stringent upper and lower bounds on the aggregated probabilitiesP[n], the probability of occurrence of exactlynevents (n= 0, 1, …,m); and onP1, the probability of occurrence of one or more of themevents. The most stringent bounds onP[m]andP1are more stringent than corresponding bounds presented in the literature, for most systems.
