An optimum partial sequential procedure for testing a null hypothesis concerning the binomial parameter with a two-sided alternative hypothesis is described. Formulas for its operating characteristic and average sample number functions are derived. By approximating an Armitage procedure by a special case of this partial procedure, approximate values can be obtained for his operating characteristic and average sample number functions.

A class of test procedures is proposed for the two-sample setting when one of the samples has a fixed sample size, and the second is obtained by an inverse binomial sequential sampling scheme. These procedures allow either a classical approach or a completely nonparametric attack to a wide variety of two-sample problems, Properties of the tests are discussed, Including limiting distributions as the fixed sample size tends to infinity, and the capability of obtaining asymptotic power restrictions against specified alternatives of interest. Criteria for selecting a particular procedure are discussed.

In sampling from general populations, the skewness and kurtosis statistics are subject to the constraintb2> 1 +b1. A bivariate product-density model for the distribution of √b1andb2is studied, consisting of a JohnsonSuapproximation to the marginal density of √b1, and a gamma density for the conditional distribution ofb2. Equiprobability contours are given for sampling from normal and nonnormal populations. In the normal case, an eight-parameter model is completely specified.

The computation of percentage points by analytic continuation of the series solution at the origin is shown to be feasible for a useful range of parameter values.

We considerF-independence properties ast→ ∞. We show thatFindependence properties become independence properties or neutrality properties [1, 5], respectively, when the variables converge properly, or are asymptotically proportional to the bound. Examples of important families of distributions which satisfy the convergence criteria are given.

Two well-known simultaneous inference procedures for balanced one-way layout are Tukey'sT-method and Scheffé'sS-method. TheT-method gives short simultaneous confidence intervals for all pair-wise comparisons while paying a high price for high-order comparisons. TheS-method is appropriate when one has uniform interest in all contrasts, but gives long confidence intervals for pairwise and other low-order comparisons. In this paper we propose a family of procedures intermediate between theT- andS-methods. The resulting simultaneous intervals are shorter than Scheffé's for low-order comparisons, shorter than Tukey's for high-order comparisons and shorter than both Tukey's and Scheffé's for intermediate comparisons.
