摘要:
Consider someone who sets out to collect data sequentially in such a way as to disprove a hypothesis,H0, about the value of θ, the mean of a normal distribution. Observation is continued as long as the posterior probability ofH0exceeds α1and stopped when it falls below it. It is shown that if a non-zero prior probability,p, is assigned toH0(0≤α1<p) and the remaining prior probability is spread over alternate values of θ that the probability thatH0will eventually be rejected when true is

摘要:
In this paper we review the literature on the problem of handling multivariate data with observations missing on some or all of the variables under study. We examine the ways that statisticians have devised to estimate means, variances, correlations and linear regression functions from such data and refer to specific computer programs for carrying out the estimation. We show how the estimation problems can be simplified if the missing data follows certain patterns. Finally, we outline the statistical properties of the various estimators.

摘要:
Quantiles of circular error, of which the CPE (circular probable error) is a special case, are of importance in the evaluation of ballistic missile systems. In these applications, a quantile of circular error is the radius,R, of a circle centered at (0, 0) above which lies a specified proportion,P, of the bivariate normal probability distribution. For this distribution,Rmay be estimated by substituting estimates for parameters in the integral equation definingRand solving the resulting equation. The variance of the asymptotic normal distribution of the resulting estimator is given. Infinite series expansions of terms defining this variance are presented. For certain ranges of parameter values, the series converge rapidly. Outside these ranges numerical integration may be required to evaluate the variance. Special cases of interest and several related problems are also considered.

摘要:
Using the concept of an idealized light bulb, one subject to a constant probability of failure while in use, certain distribution problems are solved heuristically. These include: (1) The distribution of sums, or differences, of products of pairs of independent standard normal deviates; (2) The distribution of the difference of 2 chi squares, each with even degrees of freedom or, equivalently, the difference between 2 total waiting times; (3) The distribution of the ratio of 2 chi squares, each with even degrees of freedom or, equivalently, the ratio of 2 total waiting times; (4) Distributions arising in a simple exponential growth process.

摘要:
This is an expository paper on the fixed sample size indifference zone formulation of the ranking and selection problem. A particularly simple proof of a theorem which is useful in this formulation is given, and its use is illustrated.

摘要:
Although accurate and relevant data about land are valuable in helping to answer many questions of public policy and private action, such data have not been generally available in the past. Most data about land have been fragmentary in the land uses included or in areas covered, or both; data series have typically been established to meet special purposes. The various concepts about land have often been confused; the areas of data summarization have typically been too large; and data collected at considerable expense have often not been kept current in spite of the fact that it would have been possible to do so, from records of current operations of local governments.

摘要:
Surveys of consumer intentions to buy are inefficient predictors of purchase rates because they do not provide accurate estimates of mean purchase probability. This is a consequence of the fact that intentions surveys cannot detect movements in mean probability among nonintenders, who account for the bulk of actual purchases and for most of the time-series variance in purchase rates.

摘要:
The maximum likelihood estimators of the three-parameter logistic growth function with independent homoskedastic normally distributed error terms have, for sufficient observations, a variance-covariance matrix whose inverse is obtained. Some properties of the estimators are derived. An experimental study shows that small numbers of observations may lead to least squares estimates which do not have the convenient properties of estimates based on large samples.

摘要:
Data are available to study the variation in mortality in this country occurring month by month for fully six decades. Death rates by month have been computed and published for the expanding death-registration area of the United States of 1900–1932 and for the complete nation (48 States and ultimately 50 States) from 1933 to the present.
